contrary to what the majority of people think, I believe that the first birthday party is very important. People think that since your daughter won't remember it anyway, it won't be such a big deal. I think that it's not about your daughter remembering it, it's about you celebrating her birth. It's about you celebrating how precious she is to you, and sharing that with other people. It's also a wonderful feeling when she's all grown up/when she's a teenager, foro her to look at the pictures and see how precious she was and that she had a beautiful first birthday party! She'll brag about it to all her girlfriends!
My husband's neice had her first birthday party at the function room of a hotel. Most of the guests were adults-all the people that are important in the life of the little girl. It was just a big dinner with birthday cakes for dessert and a lot of picture taking!
There's another little girl's birthday party that I know of that was held at a clubhouse. They hired a party organizer/even planner to take care of all their party needs. The theme was princess party, and she even had a ligthweight tiara on her head. I still can't figure out how they attached it to her head though, without it's falling down. I guess there are experts who can give advice on that.
If you'd like a children's party and don't look forward to spending so much, there are restaurants that will cater to birthday parties at their restaurant, or they will come to your house/ wherever you want it to be held at. They'll have party packages, so you can choose a cheaper price, if ever that's the more practical option for you.
I always recommend hiring party planners, or enlisting at birthday clubs with restaurants or avaling of party packages, because it takes so much burden and stress off of your own shoulders! All you have to do is let them know what you want, and do a little supervising.

Is there a specific character she likes lately? We did the Sesame Street theme for our daughter's first birthday because she was really into Elmo. We kept it pretty simple - Elmo cake, an Elmo Mylar balloon, regular red, blue and yellow balloons, Sesame Street plates/napkins, and we had lots of containers of bubble mix, noisemakers, and other cheap "party toys" so the older kids at the party could would have some fun things to do. My daughter's favorite parts of her first birthday was eating the birthday cake and watching the kids blow bubbles. My one bit of advice is not to get too stressed out over this! Enjoy the planning and the party - she is only one once. :)

We did Care Bears for my daughter at her 1 year b-day. She loves Care Bears even at one. Cute rainbow cake, plates, cups, balloons (Which she also loves!), and a new Care Bear bear. It makes it easy to shop for too if people know it's the theme.

for the first birthday I wouldn't really worry about doing anything.. it isn't like she will remember. for my sons first birthday , our family got together and went to eat and had a cake. it was tons of fun and it wasn't that much only. try something like that.
