The short answer is, you don't. Anything that you do to discourage her, will also discourage her from using it for the right reason. You could try to bribe her. Offer her another cool, comfortable spot to relax, with an interesting new toy, or some catnip. If she realises this is a nicer (and cleaner) place to enjoy the cool, she'll lose interest in lying in her litterbox.

Oh, that's a tricky one, because you really don't want to associate anything negative with the litter box. That is a delicate relationship=kitty and litter box!!! My shelter kitty did that for awhile, but then once I put a lid on it, he stopped doing it for so long, and then stopped it altogether.
One more thing you can try, I guarantee it will work. The automatic litter box. Once they see that thing moving, they won't want to lay in it anymore. However it is expensive, and it does scare kitty a little in the beginning, but they always get used to it. Trust me, my mom has 6 cats and they all got used to it. Mine did too. So out of 7 cats, we've got 7 users. It's a good box.

They do that because it is cool, but also because it's a smaller space than the whole house (duh, I know) so it seems safer. Maybe put a small box with an old pillow case or part of a sheet in it for her to sleep in. When you see her lying down in the litter box, gently pick her up and move her to her bed. Cats are smart, and she'll catch on. Be sure to praise her when she uses the litter box.
She'll soon venture out and you'll find her sleeping everywhere, on the couch, the dryer, the dog, if you have one.
Enjoy her, they're great companions, and entertainers.

My Gizmo does every once in a while, usually just after I put freah kitty litter. I just pick him up and place him somewhere else like on the bed or I take him to another room. Just don't scold her for laying in there. You don't want Kitty to think of the litter box as a bad place she shouldn't be.

Maybe you are keeping it TOO clean. After she has used it and you have cleaned it out put a soft bed over the top and let her lie there. Then after she has her scent on that you can put the little cushion or whatnot somewhere else.
My cats will seek out the bathroom tile, lot of cats like sinks and bathtubs when it gets very hot.

Its ok if she lies in it, its natural she may grow out of it or find a different place. but make sure you don't punish her for being in it. Because she may associate punishment with the litterbox do you would be detraining her.
