Are these guys an elite light infantry unit, like the Rangers, or more like Special Forces?

They do most of the successful combat missions for the French Army. The rest of the French Army does parades and surrender ceremonies.

Answers. light infantry YES, Elite NO, Rangers, No, Special Forces NO...pretty much anyone can join (No criminal record) and fight for money for the French

Their official job is to win back France from a hostile invasion. They have been generally noted as France's soldiers for foriegn missions. That means that if you see a French soldier outside of France, chances are he is in the foriegn legion.

anyone from any contry can join the french foreign legion
