A friend of mine is planning to move to Canada and renounce her USA citizenship. I may do the same in the future, if things here don't change. Does anyone have a link to a government site telling you how to do it? Do you need to leave before you start the procedure?

Thank you to all those who have provided details. This is not for myself, although I'm considering it as well.

I'm not looking for an ethical evaluation of the act of renounciation. I'm looking for information. Kindly, shove your opinions "where the sun don't shine."

You must move to Canada and become a Canadian Citizen before you are allowed to renounce your Citizenship. Otherwise, you'd be "stateless" so to speak. The request must also be made at a foreign consulate. You cannot do it while standing in the US. Here's an article about the matter:

PS: Be sure to get citizenship before you do this. It's not as likely as you might think. You can declare yourself a "liberal ex-patriot" all you want, but if you don't offer descent job skills, no other country is probably going to give you citizenship. Be careful.

You have to start the process to immigrate to Canada - but be forewarned - you cannot escape the US in Canada - we know everything about America, we are inundated with their programming, news and internet, we are taught US history as well as our own and world history - hmmmm then again you just might learn something about the US you never knew - Come to Canada and learn about the US - that's a new motto!

You will find that the US is NOT the ONLY country where one can be whatever they want to be - that is a lie they teach little Americans to keep "y'all" from thinking about the world!

Oh and public displays of affection are welcome even between same sex couples!

As a Canadian, I would say you will be welcomed.
However , to be honest, I feel it's better to stay and help change what it is you don't like. If not, it's not necessary to renounce your US citizenship. I'll also recommend that you don't overreact to the present situation. Bush will be gone in 2 years and hopefully things will get better. Whatever you and your friend decide to do, all the best.

I'm not sure about renouncing citizenship but if you wish to becoem a citizen of another country then you would file to becoem a citizen there and once it goes though then your citizenship here would be gone.

You just move to a different country and apply for citizenship under their rules. I am glad when those who say they don't like the USA just move out of the best country in the world. America...God shed his grace on theeeee!!!
This is the only country where you can be what you want depending on how hard you work for it!
God Bless America!

What exactly is so bad here? My aunt recently died in canada because the gov't cut back so much on funding the national health care system waiting to get help. I love my Canadan relatives and I wish they all lived here more than there.

Is she sure about this? I dated a Canadian in Ontario and I didn't feel that secure about even holding her hand in public. I was told there are a lot of Canadians who don't like to see that sort of thing, and you can really on;ly get away with it in the bigger cities like Toronto or Vancouver. Personally, I didn't see any gays being openly affectionate up there? I don't think Canada 's gays are as open as we are hearing. Of course, I could be wrong on this? I'm just going by what I observed when I was up there.

Miha,
If you want to move to Canada, then move. Keep your license, car insurance, renter's insurance, social security card in hand.
