A few or couple months ago I met this little girl, and a few days to a week after I had a dream about her.In the dream the girl's face was disfigured and she was walkin up my driveway holdin her right arm in her left hand. We'll I later learned that the girl was disabled, she at the time was 9 yrs old and in 2nd grade. She doesnt know how to read, spell or anything.I would like to help her,but I've run into the same problem her parents did;which is she's defiant and rebellous when it comes to learning or doing stuff she doesnt percieve as fun. Also she's physically & mentally underdevepedThe girl oringinally came over my house becuase she likes my cats;so when she comes over I like to see if I cant try and help her when I see her.Other than praying for her,I like her family am at a lost as to how to get her to start focusing and having her learn something useful to her. This year she's starting 3rd grad and still cant read or anything.Any suggestions as how to deal with her?

Stop trying to help her.
Try to treat her like an equal human being, it's really the only way she'll open up to you.

Use what she likes to help her learn. If she like to play with the cats, use them as rewards.
For example, five minutes of learning something equals 10 minutes of playing with the cats.
Whatever she perceives as fun can and should be used as a reward after learning exercizes. Soon she will expect to learn or study before rewards are offered in the form of what she finds fun.
This can be used with tv time, cats, so much more.
Her parents and teachers probably use some form of this system from how you describe her behavior.
If she is playing with the cats, do not be afraid to read to her. Children are very good at multitasking. They seem to learn while running around and playing while stories and lessons are being taught.

I commend you on your efforts, dealing with this situation is hard, How old are you?? This is an important question, IF you are In school with her, then you cant help her too much you have to try to just be her friend and see if she will open up to you. If you are an adult or Elder teen the you can take a more fun approach you can create fun activity's that will teach her things with out her realizing that she is learning!
I think I have some websites with some fun things if you are interested you can email me using my avatar

I imagine she's in special classes and the teachers know what to do. It's great you want to help her, but all you can really do is be her friend. Let her see your cats, teach her how to treat them. Sometimes you can get thru to a child thru animals. You can't teach her anything if she refuses to try. Maybe you could try reading her some stories, might get her interested in learning to read. God bless you for wanting to help this little girl.

You could have her over sometime and while she is there..show her many prictures of different kinds of cats complete with clearly written labels of the kind of cat pictured. Explain to her that there are many many different breeds of cats and that all cats have different personalities. Make sure are you pronounce each word to her that she can see the movements your mouth makes so she can learn to pronounce it as you do. Point at the letters of the word you are pronouncing .. you could even use your body to make the general shape of the letter you say as you spell out the word.
Seems to me you might want to go into university as a speech therapist or as a communications therapist.
God bless you for being so kind.

As a retired special education teacher, if she is mentally delayed, she needs to be in school with special teachers. Your only job is to be nice to her and befriend her. It sounds like she is under a lot of pressure from her parents to do things she isn't capable of doing......therefore, she is rebellious......can you blame her???? That is the only way she knows how to express her frustration. I can't even imagine why she has NOT been in school for several years now. Not sure in your state, but in Texas that would be considered a crime on the parents. I don't know what is going on, but if necessary, call child protective services only to tell them the child is not in school. Good luck

Try using colorful, bright, attention grabbing letters and numbers. If you can sing try to joke around a lil bit and show her that learning can be fun. Pray and ask God how to teach her, God will open your eyes to see and maybe she needs to build trust with you before you can try to teach her something. Sometimes you might have to be strong and not let her walk all over you.

You need to be her friend before you can be her tutor. Gain her trust by just being there. Speak proper, non-slang language to her so that she gets used to the way people should speak. Don’t point out her frailties and handicaps. In time, she will come around.

I agree with AlwaysLaughing. Also, she's into animals so try animal themed books and flash cards.
