I'm curious as to how the figure of 33% of the world’s population being Christian was reached. I know that even though I do not believe or practice any faith, that I am in fact counted as one of those 33% (I wonder if I could write the Vatican and get my name off the list...hmm). And I also know that when I was in the Navy almost everyone declared themselves some sort of Christian, roman catholic or was ever, yet few of them really were.
So I guess what I was wondering is what percentage of the 33% actually believe, and of those that do hold some belief how many are actual practicing Christians.
I would bet that the number of "active" members in Christianity is much lower.
Additionally during my research I discovered that percentage wise the Christianity has lost about 3% of it following in the past 100 years. That is to say that in 1900 36% of the population was believed to be Christian and now only 33% are.

I'm a christian and don't believe it's anywhere near that. If it were half that high I would be pleasantly surprised. Maybe it means come from countries that had christian heritages centuries ago...

Well..yes about 1/3 of the world are Christians (around 2 billion people). And about 1 billion of those people are Roman Catholics, and the other one billion are Protestants or Orthodox Christians.
But these days, there seems to be very few "active" Christians--I saw a survey once that mentioned that only about 20% actually go to church on a regular basis...

It may be true that there are less Christians in the world than there was in 1900 bypercentage - but then again the total number of Christians in the world (over 2 billion today) is greater that the total number of people in the world in 1900

I do not think that is true. I havn't even heard this figure. Most I heard was a billion.

But remember how statistics work...particularly in the hands of people with agendas. A lot of nations official religion is christianity... where most of the actual population may not really be christian. 33% of countries may have a form of christianity as their official religion, or 33% of the population lives in such countries (although, I don't think even that is true).

I think there are probably more Christians than what you would think and how would they come up with 33% of the world. That is probably just an educated guess. I would seriously doubt that you are counted as one. I myself have no doubt that I am. When it all comes down to the answer, the only person that really knows how many are Christians and how many are saved is our Lord and Saviour, Jesus Christ. I don't care how many, as long as I am one of them. I know where I am going when I die and that promise will keep me going the rest of my days.
God Bless you and I hope you find your answer.

There is no way that anyone could collect that data.

BTW -- I knew someone who actually did write to the Pope and ask to be excommunicated. He was contacted by the office of the local bishop, and they complied.

I really wonder how they got that percentage - church's roles, church's attendance, picked a figure out of the air!@

i know that in the UK you have to put your denomination on legal papers etc even if you aren't practising
just occasionally do the put " other " on legal forms
so i do wonder if they get that number from those who just tick the box closest to the one they are .. or the religion they are born into
i know i used to
