use mapquest - it will give you km or miles whichever you prefer and time as well.
Is it worth renting a car and do a oneway journey? Check the rental companies. Or you can try one way flight. Expedia.com use codes EWR for Newark and YYZ for Toronto

Im assuming you rules out flying and dont have a car.
The only way would be Greyhound from the Pt Authority in NYC
