the old saying "like it or lump it" is confusing. Lump what? What does "lump" actually mean? How do you "lump" it?

It means there is nothing you can do about it, and you have to accept things as they are.
The lumps refer to when you get in a fight, and have been hit several times, and lumps occur. You have lost the fight. All you can do, is accept defeat and also your lumps.

To lump it in this sense means to put it all together in a mental trash bag, drop it from your mind and move on.
