Kids have a hard time understanding the concept of germs. Try this...Next time your niece goes to the bathroom, don't say anything about wiping her bottom. Just have a bowl of glitter ready. Tell her you are going to play a game and have her dip the palms of her hands in the glitter and sit back and wait. After she has been running around touching things...maybe even food...she should be leaving a trail of glitter wherever she goes.THEN you explain what germs do...including those that come from going to the bathroom...and that every piece of glitter she sees is like a trail of germs she is leaving that could hurt her or those around her.
Of course, you do have a bit of a cleaning project ahead of you after the lesson. <>

After she goes to the bathroom, make her stay in ther bathroom until she washes her hand. When she does wash her hands on her own, give her a little reward (sticker, M&M, 1/2 a cookie, etc.). Tell her that she will not be able to eat/watch tv/anything else until she washes her hands. Eventually she will get the point that if she does it by herself, she gets a little treat.

We started early on with our daughter's potty training that after she wipes, she must wash her hands. We made it a game. I asked her to wet her hands and see how many bubbles she could make before I counted to 10. She loves the feel of the suds on her hands. Now I don't even have to remind her. Of course now she washes like she's scrubbing in for surgery!

I would say the mother's need to start helping with this. Personally, as a mother, there would NOT be any cartoons and they WOULD NOT leave the bathroom until they washed their hands. I would not care if we stood there for an hour, we would not leave until it was done. Let them be mad, I would rather my child be mad at me for a short time that very sick. Let the mother know that there is a problem with that and that she needs to stand firm with you.

Who controls the tv..you or her? Get her some of that soap with action figures or Dora on the bottle..then you wash your hands with her. Lock the bathroom door so she can't get out too.
Five years old and she doesn't wipe? I'd make her walk around in her poopy pants for awhile..then when she got tired of the smell..I bet she'd learn to wipe.

Teach her the "Birthday Method" of washing hands. Most kids at the age of 5 know how to sing the Happy Birthday song. While she is washing her hands, have her sing Happy Birthday to herself or outloud. This will make sure that she washs her hands for long enough.
ALSO...There are books available to you for children of her age group that show the advantages of washing hands.
Wash your hands! by Tony Ross is a good one.
Good Luck with your endeaver.

You could try to explain about poop having germs that make you sick, but maybe its just not worth the effort unless her mom carries through with it at home.....for now, maybe try a squirt of hand sanitizing gel after she uses the bathroom, it will kill the germs, and you wont be so grossed out. Plus, it comes in lots of yummy smells that kids love. Good luck...

yeah, i have the exact same problem. My sister makes me babysit her kids, but they dont listen to me.
I think washing your hands after usuing the restroom should be taught while they are being potty trained, so that it becomes a habit, and they dont know any different. But if she wasnt taught to wash her hands, someone needs to teach her to do it now. I know that you dont have good control over her because she refuses to listen to you. But someone who she does listen to, needs to keep her in the bathroom until she washes her hands.

Buy some of that antibacterial hand sanitizer. Get the kind that's made for kids. Bath and Bodyworks has some really good ones in fun, colorful bottles. Make a really big deal out of it being "just for her."

When she comes out, ask her if she washed her hands. If she says no, ask her to go wash them. If she gets upset, calmly take her by the hand and bring her to the sink. Assist her in washing them. If she has a fit, remain calm, but don't give in. Eventually she will learn that you won't give in and won't cause a fuss when you ask her too. My son is 5 also, and I have to remind him every time to wash his hands, but he always does with no fussing. The key is to not get upset, and to follow through every time. God Bless
