If they do not know the letters then they cannot give the answers on line 4, etc. Give them a series of different animals, but that might not work either. One could use different kinds of drugs. Now that would work on a lot of them.

there are charts for people who are illiterate. for example is the "tumbling E chart". the patient will hold a large E on their hand, which is made up of paper or cardboard. so when we point to a particular letter, we will ask the patient to show us which direction the E is pointing to.

another chart which serves the same purpose is the "landolt C chart". it works the same way, as patient holds a large C and asked to show us which direction the C is facing.

there is also another chart called the "Patti Pics". they are used for mentally disabled patients. the patients has a smaller chart of the 4 pictures and we ask the patient to show us the picture when we point to a particular picture in the chart.

When they test preschoolers for eyesight they use charts with shapes, or animals of course if the kid doesn't know their shapes or animals they are sol aren't they?

they use shapes my step son was 3 and had an eye exam and they used colors or shapes.
