Whirlwind123 's answer is good.

Vigilance! Make sure you know where the cat is before opening
the doors.

You can use the spray bottle, or you can rinse an aluminum can, dry well, and put 8-10 pennies in it and duct tape the top. Anytime you see the cat near the door shake the can, but don't let him see the can/you shaking it. You want him to think every time he goes near the door it sets off this horrible noise.

Best wishes

Make the area around the door a "bad" place. Cats don't like the smell of citrus, you could use spray around the door. Use a spray bottle with water in it when he goes near the door to spray him (but make SURE he doesn't figure out it's coming from you!) There are special mats with raised bumps(called a Scat Mat), but it would have to be big enough for the cat not to leap over. There are also mats that give off an alarm sound when stepped on, this may be enough for the cat to decide the area in front of the door is not a fun place. There is a "Cat Mat" available at petamenities.com (and I'm sure it's sold elsewhere too) that gives an electrical stimulation when he steps on it. This may sound cruel, but what is more painful - the mat or getting hit by a car, poisoned, attacked by a dog...? Can you install a screen/storm door? This would provide a second barrier for the cat to get past. Lastly, feed him in an area away from the door, which will be his "good" place and gives him less reason to be near the door.

We go through this all the time with our cat. He used to be an outdoor cat, someone found him and had him placed at the shelter was his was fixed and yet he still wants out. He actually got out 3 times, 2 times we caught him and once it was raining out so hard he ran back inside faster than he had run outsde. The only advice I can give you is to look around really well before opening the door. I usually scoot ours away from the door or I have a spray bottle of water so that if I open the door too come in and he is there, I spray a fine mist once and he runs away.

Some people build sort of a screened in room out doors for their cats so that they cannot run away. they put in toys and other forms of enrichment so that the cat can enjoy the outdoors, and still be safe...but if that is not feasable, the best thing to do would be to shut him in another room before you open the door to go outside.

Put a collar with a bell on your kitty, that way you are more likely to hear it come running for the door. Also, try to not let your kitty even hang around the door. Tell him no very sternly every time he is near the door.
P.S. Try a shelter kitty next time, there are way too many kitties who need a loving home to be buying an expensive one.

If you have the room you could build a small cage onto the back of your house, adn put a dog door in it that way he could go out and come in when he wanted to, i have one of these at my house.

But if you dont' have the room, there is no way to make 100% sure that he doesn't go out again, I am assuminghtat because he spent alot of money for him he is not neutered that will help.

or designate one room for him and keep the door shut when you are leaving or coming home.

All my kitty's are trained to a harness, I got them at petco, they are actually a ferret or rabbit harness. if he is young you can teach hime to be outside on the leash.

keep your cat in a different room each day to get a different atmosphere and then when you think he's ready let outside. If you still want your cat to stay inside tempt him by putting food and toys in the room.

Maybe when you get ready to open the door you should put the cat on a leash!@

there's no way to prevent him from slipping out. just make sure he has a collar with your address and phone number on it in case he does get lost.

There is a spray you can buy to repel him.

Have him neutered, he wants to mate or mark otherwise.
