Do you mean DESCENDING (from the top to the bottom) or ASCENDING (from the bottom to the top)?

Ascending would be:

Patrolman
Detective
Sergeant
Lieutenant
Captain
Chief

Descending, of course, would start with the Chief and work down to Patrolman

You'll find from all the varying answers above that cities and counties can use different systems of rankings. What you read here may be a little different than where you live. Sometimes the size of the department has alot to do with the ranks needed and the terminology used.

Sheriff
Chief Deputy
Asst Chief Deputy
Detective / Deputy
Deputy
Deputy-in-training
Reserve Deputy

The city I lived in was this way:

Police Chief
Asst Police Chief
Sergent
Corporal
Patrolman First Class

and last police trainee
