Anything you learn will help, there are classes tailored towards basic self defense.

If you want to delve deeper and learn more than just basics look for any martial arts school. Now I'm not sure if it is bashing or misunderstanding but I see this question a lot and people are always saying stay away from Kung Fu and Tai Chi.

I don't understand the reasoning since these forms are the forerunners of most forms of martial arts. Kung Fu and Tai chi usually have a deeper more rounded system as they have been modified and changed through their early history to cover many aspects of combat. Now I am not saying they are better or worse than anything else out there but they are easily comperable to any form you look at.

For simple self defense moves find a self defense class in your area. Unless you are wanting to study a martial art, don't waste your time studying one, because it takes time to learn enough to fight with it. If all you want to do is learn something th help you get out of a situation, contact your local police to see if they have a program or know of one.

Having suffered (and I mean suffered!) from low self-esteem and depression all my life I can only add that Stingray is the man to listen to... No 'self defense' move is going to help you if your cringing in a corner with your hands over your face... Try Stingray's advice and if that doesn't work get some professional counselling help... You need to build your ego, not your muscles! ;-) All the very best with it... I do Tae Kwon Do by the way, I'm 'only' a yellow belt (get told off for putting the 'only' all the time... ), but it's getting better all the time... My hubby and my nine year old also do TKD and they are both Blue Belts... (I had a six month break to get through my last depression.. but I'm on their tails!)

There is no short cut to self-defense. Many people are suggesting Krav, I don't know much about it but let me remind you of one small concept that is very important.
What you do decides who you are when it is too late to do anything about it.
Simply put, if you learn the best martial art move in the world and you do not practice it daily it will fail you in that critical moment.
There is a Japanese concept known as mushin, thought without thought. This is the goal of daily training, when you are attacked you will react, if you train properly you will react in the correct manner.

Check out your local schools and see what s available first.
For real life self defence I would look into.
Krav Maga
Karate - Kenpo
Aikido (more spiritual, for defense not offense)
Brazilian Ju-jitsu

I would stay away from arts like
Tae-Kwon-Do
Kung-Fu
Tai-Chi

Find something that interests you and go for it. Have Fun!

i'll just list simple few strikes, but grapple it really varies on what situation you are in and that means lessons and lessons of explaination that i can't do here.

hand strikes (to the head or the body)
jab
back hand punch
hook
uppercut
hammer fist downwards
hammer fist to the person behind you (you the back of your fist to strike)

kicks (face or body, and kick as you would kick a door open with all of these)
front push kick
round house kick
side kick
back kick

these are just the basics that you can do alone without any problems. all of the hand strikes could also be turned into an elbow strikes. remember these are only the basics and if you want more i would suggest you find a dojo/dojang.

I have a background in many styles of martial arts and i would personally suggest you try out jujitsu...in my experience it would b the most helpful when it comes to true self defense. it deals with real life things like if somebody came up and grabbed you or if somebody tackeld you...most street fights don't don't stay on their feet too long...and jujuitsu will teach you ground grappling. i think that's ur best bet...

Try Krav Maga. But the best self defense is self confidence my friend and that only comes through many years of training.
