It's commonly referred to as the 'morning after' pill. It's also called emergency contraception, a pill that can be taken up to 5 days after a sexual encounter to avoid a pregnancy.

It's available by prescription from a doctor. The FDA has yet to decide whether to make the drug available, over the counter.

But, now New York State legislators have taken a step toward making the drug more widely available.

The plan, given final legislative approval by the state Senate, would make the drug available in drug stores when distributed by a pharmacist or other health care provider, such as a nurse.

The argument over wide availability of the drug has sparked the usual debate.

"It divided the Senate. Vote was 34 to 27. It's a matching bill with the assembly. It will now go on to Pataki. We will now lobby Pataki not to pass the bill. It's not good health care. It's not good health care for women. It's terrible health care for teenagers," said Cindy Falise, with the Syracuse Roman Catholic Diocese.

"What's really interesting about this particular medication is that research that has been done around teen use and teen access to emergency contraception would not support that there is likely to be abuse of the medication," said Betty DeFazio from Planned Parenthood.

There is no indication yet from the governor on whether he will sign the bill.

Its about bloody time, the UK has had this on the market since 2001 and its been available in the rest of Europe for a long time!

If it wasnt for our stagnant government held down by the conservative christians I think it would have been approved a long time ago.

I support the fact that its reserved for women over the age of 18 (I feel that as long as you are the responsibility of your parents then they need to be aware of what is going on with you and your body)

I am glad that the option is available to me - being that I am 27 if I happen to have a mis-hap I can take this pill instead of going thru the trauma of keeping an unwanted baby or getting an abortion.

3 cheers for a womans right to her own damn body!!!!

I am totally for the morning after pill because it is not abortion it prevents the egg from being discared therefore not fertilizing it. It would help us society now days with so many pregnant teens leading a shiit life. I hope people use it on time because if ur pregnant theres nothing the pill can do anymore. Maybe they should make the pill still a bit high on price that way they dont over use it hence it is only for emergencies u know people will use it all the time.

The pill is already sold over the counter in 6 States and it does not harm the fetus if you happen to be already pregnant. They say it could cut in half the 3 million unwanted pregnancies every year and I think that's great.

The people that opposes it says it will encourage promiscuity among young people but I don't agree because not many young people nowadays are stupid enough to be having unprotected sex anyways. If they are already sexually active or inactive I don't think the pill being sold over the counter will change that much the statistics.

I still feel that this is a BAD form of contraception. If you can afford this pill then why not use something to PREVENT the pregnancy in the first place. This pill is still killing a baby that has a potential for life. This sounds like something girls will start taking advantage of. I guess this would be okay in instances where a woman was raped but if she just willingly has unprotected sex then she should face the consquences of making a baby.

I am sooooooo glad!!!! I work at a pharmacy and even if someone has a script the pharmacist that works there won't fill it because of personal reasons. I can not wait to be able to see the pill to customers.

I am glad that teens still have to go to the doctor to get it (though it would be really easy to just get an older friend to buy it), because it's important to understand that sex does have consequences. Also, it does mess with your body, so I'm not sure girls whose bodies are still developing should have easy access.

But I am glad that it's legal and available OTC for adults.

We have had it for quite a few years over in Britain.

I used it once and I hope I will never be in a situation to ever use it again. It made me depressed, albeit for a couple of days. I was just getting stressed and upset over nothing in particular.

I'd rather use the Pill and good ol' condoms! :) Nip it in the bud before anything starts.

I don't like the fact that this will become the new "IN" method of birth control....but it's a lot better than some poorly-guided women using abortion as a form of birth control.

Standard birth control methods should still be used IMO, but it is nice to have this option out there if it's needed.

I'm sorry people but what's wrong with self control? Doesn't anyone take responsibility for their actions anymore? The choice is made when you chose to have unprotected sex!! (exception for rape and incest)

It's sad what the world is coming to but then I guess we should have been expecting it for some time.
