Vague question, because there are various types of left-wingers as well as right wingers. Both groups have varied opinions within them.
Unfortunately, our government has been fostering a division between us all, and as a country we are more divided now than we have ever been since the Revolutionary war.
While there are a few goodie-goodie tree huggers on the left, you're foolish to think they are the majority. A major concept of the left, however, is putting FIRM controls on just how much power our government itself can have...especially over us. Our forefathers attempted to create a Constitution that would protect us from government gone awry...and for VERY good reason. It's WE THE PEOPLE, not them the government. They are our leaders, NOT our rulers. THere's a difference.
It's also unfortunate that the once-great right-wing party has been all but taken over by the neo-conservatives....power hungry, and darkly powerful, they threaten everyone who doesn't agree with them. They propagandize by giving bad ideas cute names, such as "family values", which is nothing more than sanctioned discrimination. Like many (not all) churches, they play on peoples fears, misconceptions, prejudices, and hate to consolidate their constituency...just GIVE them an enemy to group together against, even if it's just made up. Sadly, it works.
Truth is, our governmental system is breaking down. Presidents have more power than our Constitution ever intended for them to. Democrats can't make up their minds about a platform, and seem to totally miss the vital issues. Republicans play bait 'n switch, and other word games, and seem intent on making us a totalitarian government.
Both have taken "We the People" out of the decision making process, and are very rapidly selling our country out to the highest bidders.
Democracy USED to matter...now it's just profit profit profit...POWER.
