Well, after reading your second paragraph, I guess once a person is handicapped or at a social disadvantage, it is up to them to decide whether they are going to suffer or not. So maybe it could be looked at as God testing them, themselves.
That's pretty much what I would tell a handicapped person who asks "Why, me?" I'm not sure why God decided to pick some people to be handicapped, but the real question for them to ask themselves is why are they complaining. Sure, they are at a disadvantage, but they should also embrace the good things they have that God gave to them.
Just a different viewpoint I have not seen yet.

Jane, that's a serious question. It deserves some serious answers.
Here's mine:
We have a group of "mentally challenged" adults at my church. Their class is called "God's Rainbows." They are some of the happiest, carefree, loving, & compassionate people I know. They're always ready to serve in any capcity they can. The people that work with them have a unique & special bond with them all. All of them live in one group home or another, & they're constantly bringing their friends to church.
I've never heard of any of them asking "Why Me?" All I've ever heard is "How can I help?" "What can I do?"
They don't consider that they're suffering. That's something we come up with. They know they have limitations, but they don't let those limitations stop them from doing their part in the Kingdom.
This isn't true with all handicapped people. Some have turned their backs on God becaue of their handicapps. It turns some people cold & cynical.
The question is, do you see them as having a "social disadvantage" or do you treat them just like anybody else? You can't control what others do or think, you can only control your thoughts & actions.
When someone asks you "Why me?" You tell them honestly "I don't know, but I know someone who can help you understand." Then you proceed with telling them about Jesus' love for them.
It's no different a scenario than witnessing to anyone else who's in pain - physical or emotional.

Part of free will is taking consequences for our actions. Homeless people weren't created homeless, they became that way after a series of choices and consequences.
And as for the handicapped, it's not solely to teach others about compassion, but also to give the person the disadvantage necessary to be uniquely successful. For example, if I showed you a button and told you that you were unable/incapable of pushing it, that would be the only thing you would want to do. So what if you were a person who had no arms? That challenge would motivate you to strengthen yourself and learn to do it another way. It is that motivation that allows them to succeed despite huge odds.
If this answer doesn't seem complete, let me ask you--what did you expect? You're asking a mortal and imperfect being to answer for an immortal and perfect One. If you want to know more, ask Him yourself.

God gives all of us challenges to overcome. and tells us out loud that the flesh profits nothing at all... some might be thieves..some might be liars..some might be murderers.. some might be ravenous for power over others.. all people sin..even the handicapped physically. God says it is He Who does create woe and evil...so it follows logically that God will also explain why it is this way. ( isaiah 45:7 )
Remember also , that God does keep His promises and He promises that all tears...all sorrows will be wiped away as if they never happened.. and that what will remain is what we learned from the trials we bore..or the trials we gave to others.
God does say what we DO and what we THINK and what we SAY matter a great deal and when this time on earth is over we are held accountable. It is also good to remember that God is merciful and told us ..that for us to be forgiven..we MUST forgive.

I will never say that I understand why these thing's happen to some people but I will say that God does not get pleasure out of our suffering.Suffering was brought on humanity from the beginning of man when Adam and Eve sinned in the garden of Eden.I am also one that has a handicapp.I have been in bed since 2004 from back surgery and haven't walked since but I do not blame God for my disability because I know that through it all He is helping me.

God's sacrificial lamb was Jesus! He didn't have to make handicapped ppl!
Most handicapped ppl were made by human mistakes or stupidity,or just plain evil!
Jesus said whosoever accepts these as a little child, accepts me also!I am handicapped & get treated awfully by alot of ppl!But God helps me,just at the last moment & gives me strength.
You see,He does not make me suffer, but He gives YOU a chance to help me & honor Him!

I first want to thank you for such a thoughtful question that with many answers will I'm sure benefit all who have thoughts the same as you.
Also, for people who have either not given a care for the handicapped or have never knew what to put in the answer column.
When we all see a handicapped person we feel something inside. Some like yourself, want to blame God. Some just say under their breath, better him/she than me.
If you loved God as much as He loves you, you would know that it is not God that is to blame for the handicapped of the world.
He's not to blame for cancer or diabetes's. or for that matter any illness.
WE ARE TO BLAME.
WE ARE TO BLAME. I needed to say it again. With our lust for oil, with are lust for computers, with our lust for bigger and bigger, with our lust for everything.
WITH OUR LUST. A foul four letter word that God HATES.
We have allowed companies all around the world to pollute our lands and water and even our coast with their vile toxic solutions that cause birth defects and handicap our children.
WITH OUR LUST have we turned our backs on the world ourselves just to get one better than our neighbor.
Time to take a closer look at yourself and then ask God to forgive you, and you who are reading this with us, for doing nothing to protect the children.><>

Do your best to present yourself to God as one approved, a workman who does not need to be ashamed and who correctly handle the word of truth. 2 Timothy 2:15(NIV)
Since God knows what's best for you, you should gratefully accept the way he has fashioned you. The bible says, "What right have you , a human being, to cross-examine God? The pot has no right to say to the potter: 'Why did you make me this shape?' Surely a potter can do what he likes with the clay!" (Romans9:20-21JB)
Your shape was sovereignly determined by God for his purpose, so you shouldn't resent it or reject it. Instead of trying to reshape yourself to be like someone else, you should celebrate the shape God has given only to you."Christ has given each of us special abilities whatever he wants us to have out of his rich storehouse of gifts" (Ephesians 4:7LB).

We must consider that compared to all eternity, any amount of suffering a person could endure in a human lifetime, is very trivial.
