I can understand the attraction of believing that there exists a book, written by the creator of the universe, with all the answers to all the questions ever asked or ever to be asked, and that all one must do to gain the favor of the creator is to follow the rules he has set before us.
Unfortunately, that's a fantasy. No such book exists, ever has existed, or ever will exist.
Our situation is not so simple, but neither is it hopeless. We don't have all the answers, but we have the intelligence and the drive to find as many as we can. We don't need a pillar of fire to lead the way. We can make our own path. Sometimes we make our way slowly, prodding about with a stick in the dark, but we know where we're going--forward, not backward.

Religion is about power, which is why most wars in this world are religion related. Religion resembles a cult, and Islam seems to be the worst of the lot.

well that depends on who the person is. Some people choose to just follow what someone tells them while others put much time and thought and study into their beliefs. You can not lump all religious people together.

Just the opposite.
I find that religious people to be bright and well educated. Some of the greatest minds in history were also very religious.
On the other hand, I find agnostics like yourself to be completely intolerant of anyone who disagrees with you. I wonder if you ever read a book on philosophy or theology in your life? And yet, you somehow lump all people of faith as idiots.

perhaps for some, but certainly not for all of us. However, there is a sense that there is something with complete understanding of all things (having created everything after all) and its essential to have that kind of wisdom infusing your efforts to heal this broken world.

How is being a religious person not thinking for yourself?
No, it's not an excuse not to think for oneself.
