After having my wedding ring for a year, I notice that there are tiny chips in two of the small diamonds on the band. I am wondering if something happened when I had it sized or if the store ripped off my husband!

The fact that diamonds are a hard substance refers to their ability to withstand scratching, but that is different than toughness, which refers to the ability to withstand breaking or cleavage. Diamonds can chip, but only a diamond can scratch another diamond.

Diamonds are not indestructible. My mom once had a diamond that belonged to her grandmother and wanted to have it reset. She took it to the jeweler, but he advised her to leave it alone because it had a huge flaw running right through the middle of it and he said if he tried to change it it might break in half!

Why don't you take the ring and have it appraised? Then you'll know for sure. You should do this anyway to have the ring insured in case you lose it.

Diamonds are forever, and Diamonds are a girls best friend, but yes they can chip. They didn't come out of the ground shaped as you buy them. A skilled jeweler had to cut and shape them to make them they way you like them. Out of the ground they are misshapen and ugly, but when you buy them, they are beautiful. That is why jewelry stores are always soooooo bright.
