Sometimes I get confused with volumes in metric and the English system.

So a "fifth" of alcohol is really 750mL because it is approximately one-fifth of a gallon. Is this true?

A handle is 1.75liters and has a handle on the bottle.

Is there any special name for a bottle that contains 1L (1000mL) of alcohol?

And I've heard that alcohol can be sold in 4.5Liter bottles. This is about 2.5 handles worth and is a little over a gallon. Special name? Has anyone had a bottle this big? Is it like 2 feet tall or what?

Also, does anyone know what cl means? For example 75cl? I am guessing centiliters, which means 750mL?

Thanks.

You must be American??????

To your questions:

(1) yes, and before the change in the States to metric for spirits and wine (but not malt beverages for some reason) a regular size bottle was indeed 1/5 of a US gallon.

(2) I never heard of the nickname "a handle." Most 1.75s in fact do not have handles.

(3) No special name for litre bottles that I am aware of.

(4) Wines, especially champagnes and other fine sparkling wines, are produced in special 4.5 litre bottles. There is a particular name for them, which escapes me at present.

(5) You're right. And in most other countries - you Americans always want to do things differently and then try to force the world to follow - alcohol bottles are labeled in cls, not mls.

you are correct on the "fifth".

4.5 Liter bottles are the equivalent of 1 gallon in British measurement which is about 1.2 gallon US equivalent. I don't think it has a special name

the cL means centiliters and a bottle of beer is typically 75cL or 750 mL.

Yes, your first guess is right. Your 1.75lt is correct. There is no special name for a 1lt bottle that I know of. I have never seen or heard of a 4.5 lt bottle, not even in Mexico, the biggest one we have is the gallon. you have the right name for cl however it is not the same as "ml" it is one less metric meassure.
