I read a book "god without religion" that went back and forth, but it asked the reader to look at what we believe 'god' to be without the bias of religion and see what kind of a world we could live in without so much violence and chaos, hate and exclusivity, the idea of specialness and holy people, chosen ones etc. Is it possible to fathom a 'god' without what we have been told what 'god' is? LOL you try

All future judgements are based on the past and the feelings you had then. Your perception must change if you truly want to see the world differently, i.e. change your perspective, and your perception changes.
I would suggest looking into Buddhism. This path is very much unbiased and it has it's mysteries and whatnot, but when you come to understand Zen and apply it to what you have experienced that determined your perception of a thing, it is an earth-shattering moment for your heart. I promise you that much.
I believe it is quite possible to fathom God without what I (at least) have been indoctrinated about God and what He is supposed to be. I spent 7 years non-theist and now I believe much differently than I did, although the indoctrination was mostly against my will (catholic school). However, I have come back to some of their beliefs and keep Saint Michael at my side.. I am allowed to do that because I create my religion.
No hate or exclusivity here.
Plus, and I think you'll like this-- to be a Buddhist is to 'be learning how to be no body special.'
I hope I have helped you gain some understanding...
Blessed Be.

Yes, I think what the book is trying to get you thinking about is, to go beyond what your religion tries to teach you about God, or what your parents teach you, or what a old friend teaches you, and to discover him on your own.

We do not (well most people) have the brain of dogs, and we do ask "why am I here" therefore our basic understanding of creation is already covered. Now you remove the bias of specific religion stories, fables, works of art, and get to know God and understand him. Once that is done, choose your religion. For you will be choosing wisely.

Even without religion, those that feel or know of 'God' always will. There is inherent bias, as the experience of God or the divine is a deeply personal experience and one that as soon as it is experienced leads to bias from your own mind and ego.

Due to ego, even without religion, people will always want to find a way to feel special, have violence or hate towards others due to fear and a desire to control others. Religion is just one method to fuel that desire to be without fear or have control over your life and environment.

I don't believe that it is possible to understand god with or without formal religion. We only get glimpses of what god is. As soon as we try and define it we push god away from ourselves.

If you go by your logic, everyone would have their own God, and the One and only true God would be left out in the cold.God is rooted in religious faith and dogma. One cannot exist without the other.

Simple....God is love, the Devil is hate. The real question is, which will you serve?
