Until it's done, but I think if it takes more than an hour or so, I'd talk with the teacher about cutting back. Kids need down time to.
They also need to eat dinner and there are family obligations.

I think the 10 minute rule is good. First graders should have 10 minutes homework maximum, second graders 20 minutes, etc. A lot of elementary schools are going to this. It may not be the best, but it does put limits on teachers who go crazy with the homework.

Last year my fourth grade niece had much more homework than her two older sisters who are in high school. This was ridiculous and left little time for family life, exercise, sporting activities, religion and visiting with extending family (grandparents, etc.).

It depends on the kid, their motivation, and the amount of work needed to be done.

On average, I say about an hour.
Reading and project should take longer to ensure good work.

Of course, if there's no homework or very little, it shouldn't take to long, but if the homework is noticeably easy and the child seems to take forever, motivation is needed there. Self motivation would be best, but for younger kids, parent and teacher motivation should work fine.

depends on how old the child is, between 5-10 always give them a break after 45 min, 10 min only, until they finish their homework. this way the dont become too stressed. Over 10, they have to learn to pace themselves and know what works for them.

I agree with the previous repsonse. There is no set time for our kids. It all depends on what assignments they have. In my teenager's case, she has some very heavy duty homework with her math and chemistry and history classes, so after sports, she has to work on homework often until 10 pm or later.

At my house, until it is finished. If it takes till bedtime, it takes until bedtime. Homework time has become a bit ridiculous lately, though, hasn't it?

It depends on his/her grade level. The higher the grade level, the more time he/she has to spend on completing the homework.
