males don't go into heat, but females do. I would neuter him soon! it will lower the risks of prostate and testicular cancers in cats. Also, if he's an outdoor cat, he won't be over-populating an already over-populated world.

Male Cat In Heat

I am not a vet, but I am a cat owner and have had only males until 3 years ago. I have never heard anyone say a male cat can go into heat. That's a female thing. Here's what I found on Ask Jeeves and got this:

Estrus ("heat") is the mating period of female animals. When estrus occurs, animals are said to be "in heat" or "in season." Cats normally have their first estrous cycle between 5 and 10 months of age, with the average age around 6 months.

I know male cats spray, and it would be good to get him neutered, though I had a cat that still sprayed on occasion (Outside, thankfully - he was an indoor cat, but I could let him out in the backyard and he didn't run away).

If your male cat is yelling alot, he might be in some physical pain, and you might want to take him to a vet. I have an older Siamese who can really whine (As he's aged, it's louder and more frequent), but he's only looking for attention.

I've also been around a male cat that howled when his companion died. He stopped when my parents got another cat to keep him company.

Last but not least, as others have said, he might be responding to a female in the area.

Male cats prowl more at night. They also look for female cats who are in heat. My Persian escaped from the house, and would run around all night and then come home. Really wild. He had a lot of girlfriends, too. Thing about male cats, they like to mark their territory. That's the worst part.

Male cats DO NOT go into heat. If you are absolutely certain it is a male, then he is probably picking up on a female in the area that IS in heat. Not much you can do if you don't want to let him outside.

okay, so this poor soul used the misinformed term 'in heat'. We all KNOW what she is trying to say. She is correct in the fact that her male is seeking female company and probably senses a female in the area who truly IS in heat. The constant whining IS annoying and she is asking for advice (Which is...have him neutered) Let's stop berating her....I have a non-neutered male who is about two years old and has been just fine with my neutered female for the last 8 months. It is Spring, windows are open, n he has been ridiculous in his pleading for attention from her. Yes, he is off to be neutered ASAP. I just wanted you all to understand that the situation COULD happen, she just didn't phrase it correctly...cut her some slack with your condescending comments and be kind, okay? Not every male acts out immediately, but when they do sense an active female, it is SERIOUS vocal competition not unlike a female in heat. Be kind and informative, not shamers, please.

First off I would have your cat checked as I don't think it is a male. Females come into heat and cry and whine to attract a mate. And short of having your female cat spayed, or your male cat neutered there is little you can do to stop the whining and crying.

If it definitely is a male. there is most likely another male in the area that he is trying to intimidate as the only time a male will cry is to intimidate another male that is intruding on his territory.

Male cats don't go into heat. If he is whining then he may have another problem. Take your cat to the vet and have him checked out.

Males do mature and once it starts, they will continue to develop male sexual prowling behavior including howling, spraying, roaming. How much will depend on how soon they are neutered. (I don;t neuter my males either) The only way to handle it is to let him roam ande take your chances. He's going to come home (maybe) with wounds from fights, sex, traffic, and others. Have a good vet ready and also be prepared to possibly see him as kitty cardboard on the road someday. Sorry, but it may happen. Fix him or let him run. It's the only way to help him.
