I have a small Silkie Terrier and she is the best dog in the world. She doesn't shed. She's a very good guard dog for when she hears things outside and she is a very loyal dog. She goes with me everywhere.

A Shel-tie, (this looks like a small Collie) - it is not too small, just right. And my daughter and family has one. It has no odor and does have long hair. - Not too much shedding - you can stand that when you consider it's good nature and smarts. This is their 2nd one and both have been responsible around small babies. They have the herding trait. Theirs actually sleeps in the hallway where all of their bedrooms are located in front of it - so to protect. They'd bark @ an intruder - not sure they'd bite anything larger than a mouse.

I think that you should get a light brown terrier i've always liked those. Get a terrier cause even they're little they like to play a lot so i thought they were good for a small dog who likes to play.

A dachshund! They are nice, small, friendly dogs. I have a short hair miniature dachshund. Both types are small, the mini is just a little smaller than a regular dachshund.
Here's some info: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dachshunds
Aren't these pictures cute??

I love terriers - and there's many different kinds you can get that fit the small catergory. However, most are classified as working dogs, and are very energetic and intelligent, so you do have to have someplace for them to run around in and things for them to do.

I suggest getting a Chihuahua...But they are not too good around children unless both the dog and baby are young at start of the relationship.
