A lot... the paperwork is pretty lengthy, they request certified or original copies of many documents (including proof of finances), and if you are looking to immigrate from the US, you are looking at a process that will take at least two years.

Our Crackhead Conservative government can't do a thing and probably doesn't want to, about the infrastructure that was put in place for new immigrants to live at a higher standard for free than the average working family.
