Tithing (giving one tenth) was part of the old Mosaic law. That law passed away when Jesus came to fulfill it. The "law" that we should go by now can be found at Matt. 10:8 where it tells us "you received free, give free". We should each give what we can. God only expects us to do our best for Him, no more, no less. If we can afford to give 10% of our income we should. If we can't, then we should give what we can. At the same time, if we can afford to give more than 10% we should do that as well.

You will not find a command from God to tithe in the Old or New Testament. The concept is a tradition that goes back as far as there has been anything called a church. The tradition has been abused in a number of ways and much of scripture that mentions tithing is really about those abuses. That however does not relieve those who attend church from an obligation to support the church. One might even say that you should not observe the tradition of tithing because it limits what you give!
You bring up another issue which is accountability for the use of the money that is given. Scripture sure reflects that there have been abuses before there were Mcdonalds to waste it on. While we are all responsible to make sure that money given to the church is used properly it is a pretty weak excuse not to give at all. If your children snake between meals do you stop feeding them for ever? You correct the behavior and move on with your responsibilities. Matthew 25:34-40 is directed to individuals not the corporate church which could be a tool through which those responsibilities are accomplished.

It is our duty to tithe out of obedience to God, but I do agree with you. Some church leaders are going to have a lot of explaining to do for their bad stewardship. They should remember Luke 12:48 "But he who did not know, yet committed things deserving of stripes, shall be beaten with few. For everyone to whom much is given, from him much will be required; and to whom much has been committed, of him they will ask the more. "
If you think your church is misusing money, ask to see the annual audit. Every church should have one.
Here are a couple of examples:
Luke 11:42
"Woe to you Pharisees, because you give God a tenth of your mint, rue and all other kinds of garden herbs, but you neglect justice and the love of God. You should have practiced the latter without leaving the former undone.
Luke 18:12
"I fast twice a week and give a tenth of all I get.

no where is it said that tithing is an obligation since we live under grace in the new testament. God's grace is sufficient but, we should always be ready to give any or everything to God if it is asked of us even our own lives. the amount of freely giving(sowing) will always determine what we will reap in harvest. so it is always better to give than to receive. we have to remember as well that through tithing to our denomination enables the church to function and thrive sending the gospel to all nations.

I believe in tithing as well, and I agree with you that a church will have to answer for what they did with that money. Alot of people think Pastor's just want money. I think they watch tv where the pastors have more gold on them and fine suits and such and they think all pastors are that way.I know in my church money is always going out to those who are sick, laid off, and what ever may be the problem. We have a buisness meeting once a month and they tell us what money went where. A Pastor is due double honor too, so to folks who dont believe in supporting your pastor better think of what God said.

Abraham paid a tithe (10% of His increase) to the High Priest Melchizedek. Jesus is our High Priest after the order of Melchizedek. So our tythe go to His Churches. Offerings are in addition to tythes & are to other Christian ministries.
Tythe is the first-fruits that a persons labor brings forth in increase. So if I plant a cherry tree & it produces a bumper crop, I guestimate what value is 10% of that. If I earn $100 after expenses, I pay 10% tythe to my LORDs house & would be $10.
If I gave out of my poverty $1, it would be an offering to God. And God would consider that giving much.
The church helps people who are in need. The help comes from ministries in the church from people who pay tythes & offerings or who serve their time. The purpose of the Christian churches & ministries is to bring people to the saving knowledge of Jesus Christ the Lord. Jesus came to destroy the works of the devil. He came to give us life more abundantly.

Tithing will often be a controversial subject.
The attached Baptist chart will explain the various levels of tithing, and the importance of each one, and where the money goes.

17 The elders who direct the affairs of the church well are worthy of double honor, especially those whose work is preaching and teaching. 18 For the Scripture says, "Do not muzzle the ox while it is treading out the grain," and "The worker deserves his wages ."
