Yeah, Shark, Hammerhead, Barracuda, those all would be great names for subs.

Speaking of dolphins, have you ever met a dolphin commando? I should hope not...

There's also a LiveScience article with the same story.

I agree with two of the answers, I don't think that the commission of the Dolphin submarines which have ballistic missile capability will worsen the situation in the Middle East. If anything, Israel's stance will likr\ely deter Iran from the use of any non-conventional weapons.

Coragryph,

Search a little further. I doubt Wikipedia has been updated recently, and it is by no means a definitive source. Here are some links which you'll find interesting:

The United States Navy used to name submarines after fish and marine creatures.

Israel has a cruise missile called the Popeye Turbo that can carry a tactical nuclear warhead.. Now that's a name.

Israel has already 100 Jericho 1 SRBM/Jericho 2 IRBM missiles armed with nuclear warheads. I don't believe that the use by Israeli Navy of the Dolphin as a platform for nuclear missiles will worsen the Middle East situation. It is already bad enough.

Just because it can, doesn't mean it will. What would it gain Israel to employ nuclear weapons preemptively? Nothing but bad international relations and designation as a rogue state. Their nukes are a deterrent and a final option. If people would stop threatening them, the Israelis would stop striking them.

Good Sub name! The insigna of the US sub service are Dolphins. To bad we don't use Marine name for subs instead of States & Cities. Shark, Tigerfish, Wahoo. Those are sub names! USS Salt Lake City is just lame.......

Odd.

The only references I can find to ships actually named "Dolphin" refers to primarily unarmed vessels, or ships that are intended for research and exploration.

The news article you cite refers to vessels that are "Dolphin-class", based on the seaframe tested in the unarmed vessels.
