Thanks all who answered.Sorry i should've said that my son goes to bed at 7.30pm quite willingly and reads for 30mins but still takes a while to get to sleep.I only really asked as most of his friends are allowed to stay up until 9/10 and although he hasn't complained,i wondered if perhaps i was being a tad unfair.

9 year olds need their sleep, and you don't want them crampy in the morning. i went to boarding school and when i was nine i used to go to bed at about 8:15pm, i would never fall asleep at that time but if you get him in a rota thats great, but on non school days reward him with staying up later, why don't you ask your onw son, if he gives you a sensible answer accept, your a parent, there will be more serious things you will need to sort out than bedtimes.

When he's told, but generally between 8-9pm - children of that age still need a lot of sleep, at least 10 hours is good for them (it's adults that need 8 hours).
Children are possibly staying up later as they aren't as physical during the day as 20 years ago, most don't even walk to and from school anymore.

Try putting him to bed at 8:00 but lights out at 8:30.

When he falls asleep. Really, when he needs the sleep, he'll take it, whether the actual time is 7:30 pm or 11:00 pm. If you try to be responsible for him, you are teaching him the worst lesson of his life - that he can't be responsible for himself.

Oh, sure. If you let him stay up until he falls asleep then he will probably try to abuse it - for a while. But, having to get up at the same time every morning, no matter when he went to sleep, will start affecting nearly everything he does, and he will figure out for himself that he needs to go to bed early enough to get proper rest.

No later than 8.30, with 30 minutes reading time before lights out. TV after the watershed at 9.00 is unsuitable for him to see, and at 9 years old he needs plenty of sleep. I had 6 children, and we had different times for different ages- up to 5, 7.00, up to 10, 9.00(no sex on the tv in those days), over 10 but under14, 10.00, and the older children at 10.00 on schoolnights, with 30 minutes reading time.

It depends, what time does he get up? How many hours of sleep does he need to be at his best? For example, if he's cranky in the morning after 10 hours of sleep, then add a half hour to his sleeping schedule. Keep adding or subtracting until you reach the ideal time frame. Good luck!

I remember when i was that age i would want to stay up late and hang around my parents until they told me it was off to bed so I would suggest getting him ready for bed around 8:30 maybe let him watch a little t.v with you and off to bed at 9 at the latest.

I have 5 children and they all would ask to go to bed
at 8:30/9:00 when they were 9 years old, we never
had to send them.
