Charles Shaw is a very nasty wine. 2 buck "rock gut" Chuck.
Normally I go with my mood for wine and what I will be eating with it. I stay away fron Merlot because there is very little character to it. No tannin structure.
Reds-
Any of the Bonny doon brands are good and available just about anywhere. Any of the Coppola wines are good (especially Claret).
Whites-
Only good chardonays. Cakebread is by far my favorite.

I belong to the SWILL wine tasting club in my area and through this social wine tasting club have been able to try many different kinds of wine at a wide range of price levels (we pay a tasting fee which buys the wine). SWILL also now sells wine tasting party kits to host a party or start your own social wine tasting club at www.swillparty.com. The funny thing is that I just tried Charles Shaw last week at a picnic. It's also called 2-buck chuck and is actually quite good. Definitely worth 1.99. Another one I recently tried that I loved was Menage a Trois 2004 from Folie a Deux Winery. It's a Napa Valley red that's smooth and mellow. It's a blend of zinfandel, merlot and cabernet. I think it cost around $13 a bottle.
There are more wine suggestions and reviews on the SWILL website as well as lots of wine info and recipes. Cheers!

Two buck Chuck is worth every penny, ie: $2.00. It's swill. I don't know how anyone can drink it, but somehow lots of people do. Of course, lots of people drink Coors, too.
As with anything, there's usually very little benefit in buying the cheapest version you can find.
I don't have a favorite brand- there's too much good wine out there to limit one's self.
Bottoms up!

Two Buck Chuck is one of the few things I miss about California. Actually, anything from Trader Joe's.
I prefer sweet whites, some of my favorites are Conundrum (a varietal), Smoking Loon chard (sweeter than most), and just about any Reisling or Gewurtzemiener.

Yes I have but I normally buy Gallo because I grow for them and can buy it at cost. I get their Sonoma stuff for $4-6/bottle whereas you pay 10-15 in a store.
I like your shirt.

Yes, I have. I prefer the reds.
I usually buy something that's been recommended to me or that I've had somewhere. Sometimes to give something a try or just to try something new, I look for an interesting label design or catchy name.
