Hi there, I just laugh about my past 3 years of panic now. I was not able to go anywhere without carrying xanax. Fear of having another attack was the most important subject of my days. When i first found joe barry's web site i started to cry because of my happiness.

Remove yourself from any chaotic surroundings or over stimulation, then focus on breathing, just breathing, deeply to the base of your stomach, then filling your stomach, so you can feel it on your back, and on up through the top of your lungs - then take just as long to exhale. Find a mantra - like "I know this is passing" or "I am all right" or "I am slowing this down" - just something in the present active tense, and mentally repeat this while you breathe. Lay down and close your eyes of you can, but keep breathing and feeding yourself postive strengthing thoughts.

When you've managed to get throught is take a good look at your excercise and diet - being healthy and active will help keep your body chemically balanced and reduce the number of attacks or severity - you'll have more endorphins and feel better, and more energy to excercise more...it's a big cycle and it starts with not being indulgent of yourself, but treating yourself with loving care.

Don't beat yourself up - don't get frustrated or angy or freak that you're making a scene, just get up and take care of yourself and later on you can explain, sorry i had to go so abruptly, i wasn't feeling well.

they happen to lots of people. you're not alone.

I like a lot of the answers already...breathing, meditating, etc. Also, I wouldn't dismiss medicine either...Today medicine is quite advanced and gives a person more control over things like these.

If you have a chance read "The Unquiet mind"...it is about a woman with manic depression and how she comes to control her life by using the correct dosage of medicine. I sincerely hope you are able to take control of this either through mental control, medicine or both.

Good luck!

Breathing...one that's helped me is something called Square Breathing. Breathe in for 4 seconds and hold for 4 seconds. Let it out for 4 seconds and hold for 4 seconds. It has really helped me.

I've found a packet of mints, and sitting quietly at the computer reading something to try distract yourself can help sometimes (e.g. something on Wikipedia).
