i have a relationship(w/Jesus), I do not like the term "religion" a most people use it.
We are humans, we have free will, we will do with it as we please.
Jesus is a message of Love, but also a message of Truth. People don't like the Truth, if it makes them uncomfortable, or convicts them, they will deny it.
So the Truth gets distorted and used for the things you mentioned above....all in a gods name.

Yes religion is the cause of many evil things over the years, but its also been used for good. I saw on the TV the other day a guy who fell in with the wrong crowd but found religion and turned his life around. I feel many people hide behind their religion, using it as an excuse to do what they want. I feel everyone should believe what they want and i would never tell a christian they are wrong and i (as an atheist) am right, but i do find most christians don't show me the same courtesy.

Your naivety is something else! I am a Christian and I don't hide behind a computer screen to "Preach Christianity" any more than you do in criticizing it. You bet, I need something to hold onto..and that is my Savior Jesus Christ. And, by the way, "religion" has not caused all of those things...mankind has! Why don't you read and STUDY the Bible...I challenge you to do so.

I think there are those who've hijacked religion, Christianity in particular to forward un-Christlike agendas (like wars) but faith in God has also been a powerful force for positive social change. America was founded on the idea that all men are endowed by their Creator with inalienable rights -- this is the reason we are a free country, because of the idea of God-given rights. The abolitionist movement, that abolished slavery was begun by people of faith as was the civil rights movement (Martin Luther King was a reverand, and his daughter Bernice King is an elder in New Birth Baptist Church and is active in Christian causes)
And I think you should also think about this: Would you rather live in a godless society where people only think of themselves or would you rather live in a society where people feel they are accountable to a higher power. Basically in the godless society people will do whatever they can get away with unless they are forcibly stopped (by what would need to be a very large police force or army). In the enlightened society, people would behave morally on their own.

Lady, you are in the "Religion and Spirituality" section, what topic would you expect to come up? As to Christianity, that is the prevalent religion in our country, so it is that of which we can expect to hear the most. Is religion the worst thing created? I can only quote Miguel de Cervantes, "I never had the courage to believe in nothing."

Religion -- like any other aspect in life -- can be used for good or for evil. The same can be said about the Internet. The same can be said about sex. The same can be said about food. The same can be said about anything.
Religion isn't the problem. Misused or misguided people using religion for bad reasons is horrible. But that still doesn't make religion in itself, the bad thing.
The Internet isn't a problem. But if people misuse the Internet for bad reasons that is horrible. But that still doesn't make the Internet by itself bad.
So don't throw the baby out with the bath-water -- and don't knock religion just because people at times misuse it for their own misguided purposes.

You need to differentiate between Christianity and religion. Many think that they are the same. Christianity is the belief that Jesus Christ is the Son of God. Nuff said.
Religion (including Christianity, Islam, Budism ....) is how it is practiced. People take their practice of religion to extents that were not intended (I speak for Christianity). Where man get's involved he always messes up. It's our nature. And the hateful way it is sometimes practiced is also sinful.

I agree. I asked people to name things more destructive than religion, and a bunch said atomic bombs -- but how many people have they killed? A fraction of the number that relgion has killed over mankind's bloody, stupid history.
If humanity survives (which, at this juncture, don't look too good) the next step in our evolution will be to out-grow religion and move on to actual enlightenment. I don't have much hope for this -- just look at George Bush, our great Southers states, and those crazy ******* bastards in the Middle East, blowing themselves up and hanging gay teenagers, all in the name of God. Amen!

Yes I agree that religion has empowered man, but with a different revelation. God wants us to love Him back and others as well, all these manmade laws are man's interpretation, they are fallable, will misunderstand, and misinterpret what God is really saying. So yes religion has gotten out of hand but people like their rules and regulation cuz they don't have to do anything but those.
