I have a very hyper choclate lab (who I hear are the more hyper of the labs), especially when people are visiting or staying over. I heard neutering will help calm. Has anyone had experience with this? Thanks!

Also, I heard it can change their appearence (make them less "manly") So what is a good age to get this done? He is 1 now.

And in response to someone's post...it is not my dog's fault...we have put him in training and I understand he is hyper because he is a puppy. Some ppl need to get over themselves.

i have 2 labs both black and i have owned many in the past. Yes get him fixed. if he is under 4 it probably won't calm him down to much. Labs in general have lots of energy. My lab is five and he still can get hyper. especially right when you come home. My other one is 7 months. she was fixed and she was exactly the same. for sure get him fixed though!!

Well, first thing is he a show dog? Is he papered and show/work quality, good enough to pass on his genetics? Did you get him with a breeding contract? If not, then he needs to be neutered anyways.
Neutering can greatly reduce the excitability a dog has, but then it also depends on the breed and personality of the dog. You have a lab, they are excitable and goofy even in old age. And they stay in that puppy stage for the first 3-5 years of their life.
Best luck.

It won't change his appearance or make him less "manly".
It will calm him down somewhat, but labs in general are hyper until they're at least 2 anyway.
Take him to some training classes and teach him some obedience - that will help focus his energy and make him easier to handle.
And *definitely* get him neutered.

I love labs, we have a black. I've never heard that chocolate ones are more hyper than the others. You didn't mention how old your lab was. Usually labs don't grow-up mentally til about 4. Neutering always helps and it cures that wanderlust labs are infamous for and don't forget labs are the true garbage hounds, they will eat anything. After neutering keep them active and maintain a good diet to keep them trim and healthy.

Hyperactivity is a trait of labs I'm afraid until they reach 2 years old sometimes later.
neutering is a good idea for many reasons, one of which is yes they do calm done, they also have less inclination to run away, they have little sex drive, less aggressive and are less likey to suffer from canine cancer.
I would also suggest unless your dog is of show quality, you should neuter him, as any of his accidents will only add to the very overpopulated dog population and at best they will end up in shelters at worst dead on a side of a road.

You should neuter regardless if you don't plan of breeding (I don't recondmend it as there are too many backyard lab breeders). It might help calm him down around other dogs and peeing, but unlikely his whole temperment. Labs tend to be like that for 3-5 years depending of the dog, but you can give him jobs and training to help tone him down, try reading "don't shoot the dog" or "The culture clash".

Yes, neutering WILL help. We got our dog neutered when she was 1. It really helped to calm her down!
