Where I come from declawing cats is illegal and I have to admit that the mere thought of surgically removing an animal's joints gives me the shivers.

There are many other options. I would suggest that you check out some websites that has advice on ignore/reward animal training. Also use your own instinct. Why do you think your cats are scratching you? Are they not neutered? Are they playful? Aggressive? Afraid? If your cats are not neutered, they might be stressed, aggressive and high-strung, and neutering could help. If they are afraid, then you need to build up the trust between you. If it's mere playfulness then an "ouch" and prompt ignoring of the cat might be the solution. Also, if your cats are young the problem will lessen over time. If you are dealing with extreme aggression, I would have them checked out at the vet to make sure that they are not sick or in pain. Spraying an aggressive cat with water from a water bottle might be a solution.

Teaching a cat not to scratch you or the furniture should not be that difficult. I have had cats for many years and all have been able to learn and accept the basic house rules.

Good luck with your cat.

Get caps If the cats are strictly indoors all the time.
If the cats are indoo/out door DO NOT de-claw them.
They are defenseless against dogs & any other preditor.
They need front & back for defence.
You have to smack ther paws when the scratch you.
You can't just take it, they'll think it's okay & keep doing it.
Cat's understand what NO means so use it & disipline them.
They're not evil if you let them use you as a scratching post.
My cat used to do the same thing when she was a kitten but
she stopped when I started to grab her by the nap of her neck & smack her paws. But only her paws & say "NO!" Never hit her anywhere but her paws (if possible)

I know people are raising hell about declawing. But I've worked with and lived with animals all my life, and the majority of my cats have been declawed. If they are indoor cats, especially. Declawing is a painful procedure, but if you do it while they are young enough they will eventually forget all about it and still behave like they have claws. IF someone needs to choose between taking their cats to a shelter, and declawing them, I would hope they would choose declawing. Good luck.

Sure as long as you understand about declawing....the end of the cat's toe is cut off, not just the nail. It is kind of barbaric.

I have a female cat, now 16 years old, who when she was younger used to scratch the hell out of me. I had an idea one day and put on a heavy jacket and heavy gloves and approached her while she was happily snoozing on the back of the couch.

I approached her from the backside (so she couldn't scratch my face), but didn't sneak up so I didn't scare her, leaned over her, covering most of her body, an arm on either side.

I began talking to her and petting her. She started putting up quite the fuss biting, clawing and striking at my free hand, but I kept petting her and talking to her. Of course it didn't hurt me with the coat and gloves on.

I just let her throw her temper tantrum. I did this for about 5 minutes every day for about a week and started backing it down to every other day. After a month of that, she stopped her aggressive behavior. Once she realized I wasn't going to hurt her and I wasn't going away, she stopped.

If you try it, make sure you use thick enough clothing so you don't get injured and don't squish your cats. And keep your face out of claw/tooth reach.

No never! that's terrible abuse to them because thats the equivalent of us humans having the upper joint section of our fingers getting cut off. Cats who are declawed live a miserable life and are less likely to get adopted. it's humanely wrong and makes them miserable because afterwards they feel sad because of it, they cant defend themselves outside, they cant climb on things, and other miserable things for cats. DONT DO IT PLEASE!!! just cut their nails and you wont get hurt as much. also you have to know how to act around them and have a certain respect.

If they are inside cats , u need to have them declawed, for your sake and the furniture sake...... if they are outside cat, at least leave there back claws to help them in battles against other cats

NO! Declawing is very painful for them. They have to actualy remove part of their joint. It is actualy outlawed in most countries. If they are that bad, find them a home where someone will appreciate them.

no don't. because they claws are their defense. Cats need their claws. If you cuts their claws..thats like cutting off a part of their finger.
