Im making a control box, and I have 6 D cells in series. When connected the, batteries heat up and smell?

The batteries are in battery holders and they are all new batteries, same make and such. It smells like it's burning

What can i do to fix that, because i dont think its supposed to do that.

thats 9 volts,is that the required voltage and is polarity right?
other than that the load must be too much,check for a short.ie the resistance of the load.

I agree, check for short circuits.
