The thing that I dislike the most is their flat refusal to rationally discuss their beliefs. Rather than attempt to defend what they believe in, they will simply refuse to discuss it. This is very frustrating when one such as myself attempts to get a straight answer out of one of them.
I've seen it hundreds of times before. Very few of them will actually rationally debate their beliefs (and they are quickly defeated in said debate, which provokes the "faith" card, and the discussion is then over again)
But if someone wants to admit that his beliefs are "unbelievable", but he still wants to have "faith" in them... I can at least let that sleeping dog lie. But it's the ones that won't admit those shortcomings that irk me. The best term I've heard to describe it is "intellectual dishonesty". This is the basis of religion in modern times, part and parcel. And dishonesty of any kind absolutely sickens me...

wow! \Well to disprove your argument- both my husband and I are both Christian, neither of us has a propensity towards violence and we both have a genius IQ.
I am amazed at the attacks I get for decisions I make, with hte attacker having no clue of what I went through to come to that decision. They are the first to say 'don't judge', taking that quote completely out of context but will be the first to call me a weak idiot- a completly inappropriate, judgemental statement when the person has not a clue as to why we believe and do what we do.
When you have done 1/2 the hours of research and study, asking question, collecting information that I have, and have a little knowledge of my life experiences and what I deal with on a daily basis- then maybe we can talk and MAYBE you will have a little room for making judgement.
To me, the statements you have made show a lack of education, a serious lack of discernement, and a lack of understanding.
I won't say lack of intelligence because THAT would be an unfounded judgement.
I see a lot more atheists calling Christians stupid, weak , ignorant, etc without having much more intelligent to say than I see Christians making ignorant judgemental statements- not that there are not some 'so-called' Christians making inflammatory statements, but do the math and see where the inflammatory, judgmental, mean spirited statements are really coming from.
Just because you agreed with a statement does not make it intelligent or true. And just because you presented you "thought" so eloquently does not mean they are not inflammatory and hate filled.

I don't think the majority of religious people are mentally ill, though I would agree that many feel "called by their faith" to act irrationally at times. George Washington and most of the Founding Fathers were men of faith, but I don't believe they were mentally ill or of below-average intelligence.
I have a problem with those religious people who insist that everything written in their chosen holy books is "from God" and must be followed blindly by everyone without regard for the fact that human society has grown up a good bit since those books were written and some of the stories were just plain goofy to begin with. I prefer to think for myself and hold nothing so sacred that I will not question its validity. Ignorance is not a virtue.

So, who's doing the attacking here???
TRUE religion, according to Jesus is to feed the hungry, clothe the naked, visit the sick and those in prison, etc, etc.
If this is a mental illness, then why are so many working for "Habitat for Humanity", feeding the homeless, helping Katrina victims, etc, etc, etc?
Perhaps we should just let these victims suffer. After all, isn't that what "Survival of the Fittest" is all about?
But don't worry - you'll never be "brain-washed" - your mind will remain filthy, and you will remain "sane", but you can keep your sanity. I'll remain insane and continue to be "religious", helping those I can in serving the Lord.
As far as intelligence, I'm a computer programmer. So, I guess you missed the mark with your "private research studies".

Your "research" doesn't even sound sound semi-intelligent. If this is something you dislike and disapprove of so passionately, why in the world do you hang out in the Religion category? You are like a teetotaler going to a bar to watch the drunks, or vegetarian going to a steakhouse just to watch people eat meat. It seems that you have no life of your own and attach yourself to a "cause" to give your life affirmation, your "cause" being the harrassment and ridicule of Christians. Sad.

I can't imagine any Christian I know who would stoop to vulgar, sickening perverted replies to any question religious or not. Anyone who claims to be a Christian and would reply like that, really needs to take a long look at their relationship with the Lord. I know of of super intelligent people who are "born again" believers and there are some like myself who are not real intelligent. Please forgive those of us who in our zealous quest to explain the Lord in our lives, paint anything other than a loving, caring and forgiving nature.

My problem with religious believers is that they seem to be more judgmental and closed minded. I won't say that they ARE b/c I cannot group all together. In my experiences though, the people who preach forgiveness (among other things!) are the ones who are less likely to give it. You've got a one way ticket straight down unless you see and do things their way.
I wouldn't say that they are less intelligent though. Religious believers have faith in something that others don't buy into but I don't think that is grounds to say that they are not as smart as non-believers.

Religion is man made. I am not religious. I am a Christian. I don't even like the word religious. It's about having a relationship with our Creator and His Son Jesus our Savior. God is all about Love. Religion is not. Mean disruptive answers are not of God. I know we all get frustrated at times but we need to remember we all have free will and our own opinions.

I tend to dismiss the "religion" of those who resort to such tactics as that. While I'm not the most intelligent man around, I think myself capable of defending a viewpoint within reason without resorting to playground-like childish name calling! How can one be religious or consider themselves Christian when they act like that? It doesn't matter if they're offended by someone else's viewpoint, we are to "turn the other cheek" and "love thine enemies" and such. I know it gets hard, but God didn't say life would be easy. He only said, "MY way is easy and MY burden is light".

not all of them are, but i'm an athiest, and quite a few of the replies i've gotten on here from christians have been vulgar, and uncalled for. What bnugs me the most is when they think that their religion is so much better than other religions.
