You don't say what form these attacks take or whether there is a key factor. The GP is the best place to start and they won't prescribe anti-depressants if its not appropriate. They will be able to refer your friend to a specialist, Maidstone Hospital is very good. If there is a long wait, your friend could visit a hypnotherapist (very effective) depending on how they feel and what the panic attacks are like.

Good GPs will only prescribe meds to help short term with accute problems. They should refer your friend to a councellor/psychologist for help. From experience GP surguries usually have such professionals on their books so getting to see one should be easy. The best news is that phobias and panic attack conditions respond well to therapy programmes and your friend should be much better very quickly. It may also be worth looking up a helpline number in Yellow Pages or on the Internet so you can get your frien some support from someone that knows what she is going through.
