Asylum seekers claim to be in genuine fear for their lives. Why then do many of them bypass civilised countries like Spain and France and continue on to Britain? If they truly sought refuge from persecution or life threatening danger why not settle at the first country able to provide same? God Bless the Europeans.

The only real British people live in a small village in South Wales. Everyone else is an immigrant. What does that make you?

IT's BECUASE.... England and the USA have gone around the world spreading English (from the british empire to other factors) plus the large exports of products and music/movies. Of the asylum seekers that speak a second language, their second language is most likely to be english, so if they are to make a better go of living in a foreign country they would be more successful in a country where they can speak the same language (even if only basic).

Out yoursel fin the same situation. If you had to flee England, and could speak broken german, surely you would prefer to bypass France and go live in Germany.

Sometimes asylum seekers have family or a support network that they can depend on in the destination country and not in transit countries. This fact has become especially important because many countries' asylum laws have changed and no longer allow asylum seekers to access any type of social benefits while they are waiting for their application to be processed. Thus, asylum seekers need to have some sort of family/social network that will care for them and provide them with shelter while they wait.

Unfortunately we are not dealing with the problem as the rest of the EU and our government should see why we are such a favourable destination. (most of us have a theory on this answer)
While in France earlier this week I saw a French Lorry driver drop 5 obvious looking people just off the motorway near the French side of the Tunnel. We are not doing a good job of stopping them and the ones that really need our help are not always getting a chance, most do not go through the right channels to stay in the UK

Waycyber -

I'm British and I live in a small ex-mining village in South Wales!

So does that make me "real British?. Oh good I can comment then.

I think its got something to do with the fact that we have a lot more social security benefits etc in this country than they do in others where they are likely to just get told to piss off. They know we're a soft touch.

In the UK, you don't have to pay for your healthcare (all provided on the NHS), you can get housing benefit to pay your rent, maternity grants, free prescriptions, sickness benefit, tax credits blah blah blah. Asylum Seekers in the UK have been given free housing, lots of grants and benefits, basically anything they ask for, because our government is spineless and terrified of being accused of being racist or prejudiced. so they go the other way and show their prejudice to "Real" British people

If you are a Briton who has always worked hard, paid your taxes, and whose family have lived here for millenia, some of them sacrificing their lives in two World Wars for this country, and you fall on hard times and seek help from the Government the answer is likely to be Fcuk Off.

But if you're a foreigner who comes here simply to leech off the state and screw everything they can get out of our country with no intention of ever giving anything back, you seem to be welcomed with open arms. Its totally screwed.

By the way though its not just the UK. Ireland is also becoming a popular spot for asylum seekers. Remember that bunch of Afghanis who holed themselves up in a Cathedral in Dublin a few months ago, threatening to kill themselves if they didn't get asylum? No doubt they are now living off the Irish taxpayer thanks to the work of some do-gooder or another.

I asked a similar question a few days ago and was barraged by questions about my racial preference and tendencies - I have none. The route to Britain is an extremely profitable course for traffickers/asylum seekers/illegal immigrants and with our pathetic lapsed immigration laws we will always be vulnerable to them wishing to take advantage without having to move on for a number of months whilst their siblings also arrive unannounced. Charity begins at home - that's why they've all moved here - whilst they are unwelcome guests, it is home - all paid for by some of the the dipshits listed above that probably don't even contribute to the tax system - w4nkers

because the rest of europe makes it easy for them to get here...do you really think they want to keep all the asylum seekers in the first country they arrive in? no they're bright enough to realise that asylum seekers can be a strain on the economy and so they secretly encourage them to come to britain. i live in one of the worst hit area's whenever there is an influx of asylum seekers, i do feel sorry for the genuine ones but there are so many of them who are failed asylum seekers that we fail to deport and they just get lost in the system! i think britain is too much of an easy target and we should toughen up on failed asylum seekers.

"Why do Asylum Seekers bypass civilised countries if they are genuine refugees?". And why isnt the the Dublin Convention enforced?

Because they know (or they misguidedly believe) that we welcome people in need in our country. Also, many of the countries these people come from used to be part of the Empire, and are still part of the Commonwealth, and therefore feel justified in asking for help from us. Britain still has a great reputation in many parts of the world for being fair and just to people who are being persecuted. That is what makes me proud to be British. Unfortunately, many people in this country are trying to take that away with their narrowmindedness.

English. I guarantee its the ENGLISH LANGUAGE. Africans from countries that speak French go to France, if they speak German they go to Germany...See where I'm going. And besides, France and Spain have BOMBINGS. Atleast a few a year. England's only just started with the bombings.
