you didn't say you have bad credit, so the best way to improve your credit is to actually get some credit. Apply for some credit cards and not use them to much.

You don't say why you have a bad credit rating, but often time will sort it out - as long as you stay out of trouble. 6 years will do the trick to completely repair it.
Bizarrely, to get a better credit rating you need to run a credit card, get a load, etc. Making sure you repay etc.
You can check your rating here:

The only way to build credit is to HAVE credit, as in get a store card or a visa or something. dont go crazy on the debt part-- keep your balance at 40% or less....and just keep up with your payments....eventually it will go up.
If therea re any paid acounts on your record that were your spouse's, and they are bad (like late payments) try doing a dispute to get them removed.

get a credit card or a small bank loan and use them to build your credit back up. $2K will do on either. Don't pay the loan off early but you can pay the credit card off each month, just don't be late. It will take time but they need to see you are trying. Good Luck!

You get a credit report, in UK you apply to experian, they charge you £2.50 and send you the report. You can then look through all bad credit and speak to them all personally, either repay the debt, or explain your disassociation with previous partner, and ask them to take you off their blacklist. Speak to your bank for further advice.
