If not, what should the minimum age be? If yes, is there a younger age they could marry at. On a side note, can a man betroth his daughter at age 4? I have just been thinking about these questions lately.

First of all a 12 year old is not a woman. 2nd, if a father would let his 12 year old daughter get married, he's not much of a father. These are some strange questions to be thinking about. Maybe you need some help.

At the age of 12 a woman is still a girl and needs to enjoy that short period of life called childhood.

As to the minimum age, there are different laws in different countries, but I think that it should be whenever the woman and the man feel that they are ready for all the responsibilities involved.

Some cultures do betroth the daughters at the age of 4, my culture does not so I cannot really understand the logic of it. At 4 years old, I think the biggest question in life should be something like - can I learn to ride a bicycle.

The funny thing about this question is actually the lame *** responses youve received. Can no one remember their past??? Less than 100 years ago, marrying a 12 year old was completely normal......

In todays world, Id have to agree that a 12 year old girl is not yet a woman - but society's CURRENT standards. However, if you travel to an area where they are not quite as technologically advanced, we actually find that the children are more psychologically advanced at that age then they are in modern societies..... So, if in a stone age area of the world (say, downtown Afganistan), then marrying a 12 year old is perfectly acceptable. But not in downtown Chicago.....
As for question number two - again, this was a normal practice not long ago. But by todays standards, it is wrong...

No and no.
Marraige should be a lifelong commitment guided by love & trust, not some arrangement that's been created to form a family partnership or to prevent the kids from dating.

The minimum age to get married should be 25. Many people do not know themselves or what they want out of life until they've matured a little bit. This would also cut down on the divorce rate. Too many young people these days are rushing into marraige and then getting divorce within a few years....even with those arranged marraiges from India.
The partner moves back with the spouse to America & then the U.S. spouse realizes that it's not what they want out of spouse/marraige at all. It's happened to a bunch of my friends & aquaintenances

No! A 12 year old is still a CHILD who can not fullfill the duties of a marriage. If a father lets his daughter get married at 12 then he should be charged with child neglect. Of course this perception is of the average American standards. I'm sure that in the amazon forests or something, certain tribes might still practice this.

Twelve is not the age of a woman it is the age of an adolesent, and since these young girls can't get a job and support themselves they shouldn't even consider marriage. I believe that when they are old enough or mature enough to fend for themselves then they should be ready for marriage.(Probably around the age of 23 or older). And if the father that betroths his daughter at the age of 4, he'd better have a good darn reason and religion isnt one of them.

in some cultures, such as in india, a father still arranges a husband for & even marries his daughter at a very young age. some are even younger than 4. here in the u.s. though, it is very illegal to do either and it's a felony punishable by serious jail time ,not to mention the loss of ur child. u also get to wear the distinct label of sex-offender for the rest of ur life.
