For me, it is not just a question of mentality or intelligence or reason.
It is perhaps a left over from our evolutionary instinct of survival to mistrust whoever looks "different" from our tribal marks.
If not, look how cruel innocent children can be with whoever looks "different" to their perception.
Later in life, depending on experiences and education our reason will tend to overcome and erase those primeval feelings, in much the same way as the fear of darkness.

No because some 12 year olds are actually smarter than to spout the rhetoric that racists do. Racists' mentality sadly is actually sharp and acute like that of adolf hitler but their mentality's contents are warped by their own prejudiced emotions and self-love.
