I'm forever seeing them being chucked out of car windows or thrown on the pavement to be stamped out and just left there. I'm not saying don't smoke (in the right places - hey as long as its only your health your ruining?) but don't be so selfish and anti-social. I can manage to put my rubbish in a bin.

My Dad smokes. He stubs his cigarettes out then puts them back in the packet in the vacant space he just removed it from, until he reaches a bin. My Mum used to smoke and carried a small pocket ashtray for the butts. Smokers remember to carry cigarette packets and lighters/matches, so they can carry something for the butts, can't they?

The subject of other types of litter, while also anti-social, isn't part of this question. I've seen smokers bin rubbish then leave extinguished butts on the floor next to bins!

Agree, I smoke but have one of those little 'freebie' pocket ashtrays you get at the supermarket with a pack of ciggie's I don't know why people have to chuck their ciggie end on the floor or stub it out by a bin and walk off leaving it there, I stood and watched 3 people get a £50 fine last week for doing just that and they had the nerve to say well doesn't someone get paid to pick them up, how disgusting is that, like my friend says who hates smoking, one filthy habit leads to another.

AS an ex smoker I must confess to throwing them on the pavement and then stubbing them out.
I am very anti litter, but I felt to throw a lighted cigarette end in a rubbish bin was as fire hazard. In our area they are issuing small containers to put them in, which may solve the problem if people use them. chewing gum is a much more serious issue and the company's who make it should pay the council for the cleaning from the pavements.

I agree! Unfortunately, I am a smoker. I never throw the end of it on the ground. If there is no trash bin around, I put the thing out and then stick it in my pocket until I am able to throw it away. You are right, it is no different that any other sort of litter. I can't stand them things hanging around my yard and parking lot where I live.

I am a smoker and agree with you, I always stick my butts in the bin and put the ones out in the car in the ashtray - but thats about the only good thing I do on this planet... as I normally have no morals (but for this I do? - I am a weird one)

because they're so small compared to, say, a coca-cola can, or a packet of crisps. it's disgusting really, the way some people have to endure the smell (to me it's foul, but smokers are used to it, and some people just don't mind) and then see cigarette butts littered on the floor. Of course, some smokers, ARE considarate though.

Do they think they're not litter, or do they know they're litter and don't care? I've never smoked, so I'm not really able to get into the mind of a smoker. I completely agree with you, though, that they are everywhere and that they are disgusting, and should be put with the rest of the garbage.

I like these ideas. As a smoker I've always knocked the tip off and put the butt in my pocket until I get to a trash can. It's something I learned in the Army and it was called field stripping.

It's not that they don't see them as litter - it's just that there aren't many public bins where they can stub them out safely. Most smokers don't want to start a fire in a litter bin, so they just have to throw them on the floor instead.

In my home town you get fined £50 if you get caught dropping cig ends and therfore the council has installed 'stub out' ashtrays on all the litter bins, which has made more people dispose of their ends more thoughfully. In answer to your question; they will give you the answer that disposing of it in any other manner would be a fire hazard.

You are quite right ,as well as the clear plastic wraps from the boxes the buts are the about the same size as a sweet wrapper if let them get away with throwing buts then you would have to allow small pieces of rubbish
