I've had a pup shiped to us before and it is basically a very easy process. Most shipping is overlooked by the USDA has has strict regulations. Continental is the easiest and best in my viewpoint. They are not in with the baggage. On continental flights they are in climate controlled areas that are the same "climate" as the passengers and have strict guidelines on food, water, and exercise. Dogs never go through normal terminals. Usually they go to nearby cargo terminals. Your family friend who you are getting your pup from should get an address or further directions for you. If you know the airline, call them for options.
I'm not saying that this can't be stressful, but it's not as bad as those less knowledgable say... ;)

I just got my puppy this past weekend from a breeder. Each airport is different regarding their pet travel procedure. The best thing to do is call the airline and let them know you are picking up your pet. They will give you specific directions on where to pick up your pet. Depending on the airport, it might not be the "normal people" terminals but rather another area altogether. For instance, I picked up my puppy from the Delta loading center, not the terminal in LaGuardia.

Usually the dog is in a crate with some food and water from the breeder. During the flight, the airline is required to keep temperature controls every hour or so and record it accordingly to make sure that the dog is doing ok (not too hot/ not too cold, etc). When you get there, you will have to bring ID and then you will have your new puppy! Make sure you bring fresh water for it and dont let him out of the crate until you get home. Even if its tempting, it will be better off to let him out at your destination. Good luck!

Basically, you are getting an overpriced, overbred dog from a puppymill. These poor dogs are housed in filthy conditions, in cages, standing in their own feces and urine, and are forced to breed over and over (sometimes through their cages, if you can picture that) until they are "used up". Then, when they can no longer breed, they are killed - often inhumanely. They never see the light of day. They never get to blink at the sun, sniff the grass, or even pee on a tree. They are sick, abused, scarred, undersocialized slaves. They are USED for PROFIT by the "breeder"....Your "purebred dog" is probably full of genetic disorders. He or she was probably the offspring of its mother and her brother. This dog will cost you lots in the long-run, beyond what you already spent paying the "breeder"....vet bills, medicine to cure the kennel cough, the parvo, the Lepto, etc., behavior analysis, obedience training, etc...if you stick around for that. Most people just dump them in the pound. That's why 25% of dogs in shelters are "purebred". Anyone that would SHIP a puppy to anyone sight unseen, does NOT care about the dog. They care about MONEY. Why would you SHIP a dog? Why would you SELL a dog to someone you've never met? These dogs are shipped in the CARGO section of the plane and often emerge from the flight panicked, stressed, anxious, fearful or aggressive. Good luck with this one. It's so sad that 7-10 million dogs die every year in shelters, yet we MUST HAVE THAT
"PUREBRED" dog. What is wrong with Americans? The ignorance is astounding. Whatever.

Its very risky with flying with pets. Alot of animals get killed while on airplanes. There is not enough air where they are at the bottom of the plane and thier cages are not secured.

you should go to the airport terminal and wait for the plane to land or ask her if she is shipping it through a company if so they may be delivering it to your local shop
