You will probably have to have an ultra sound to find out if it is a clot.

First of all, most serious blood clots do not start in your hand. It sounds like you have a really bad hematoma, bleeding under the skin caused by an injury to your hand. Try putting ice on it if it has been under twenty four hours, if not, try warm moist compress. Second, a blood clot is detected in different ways in the body, if the clot is in your lungs, a pulmonary emboli, then you need a CAT scan or a Spiral Lung Scan. If the clot is in your arm or leg then you will need a ultrasound to detect that. Chances are however you do not have a clot in your hand, just a really bad bruise. Why avoid the doctor, this might be a good time to go have a full physical and get a professional's assistance instead of relying on someone who can not see you in person......to diagnose you.

How old are you? If you're young it's probably not a blood clot. I would go to yahoo search and type in "blood clot symptoms" in quotes. If you do go to a doctor, schedule an appointment with a specialist, not a general practitioner. It's not that expensive and if you don't have insurance ask to be put on a payment plan.

Do you feel any coldness in your fingers, like there is not enough blood getting to them? Are they turning red or blue?

Go see a doctor. If they suspect a clot, they will take an MRI or CAT scan or something of that sort. Nothing invasive.

Go to webmd.com and look up clots. Webmd.com is a great website.

they have to give you a CT scan. that is the only way to really detumine for sure that you have a clot. The sooner you rule it out the better. If you do have one it can dislodge and cause many several life threatining conditions such as Pulmonayr embolism, stroke, or heart attack.
