Birds should always have food and water available to them. Cockatiels should have a seed mix, buy at a pet store and get a mix without a lot of colored 'treats' in it. These are very fattening. For vitamins, you can buy liquid drops to put in the water. Also, cuttlebone should be available all the time for calcium. It also helps keep the beak healthy. For training tips, etc, go to

Fresh fruit and vegatables (washed very well with cold water) make good treats.

I have a cockatiel and a parakeet. They are lots of fun, but lots of work! I I order my seed from Drs Foster and Smith. You can find them on the web and request catalogs. In the mean time, go to a pet store or even Wal Mart and get some cockatiel seed. Give her fresh seed daily and change water every 2 days. I use a water bottle for mine, it doesn't get as messy as a dish, but you have to have a dish of water in the cage when you start with the bottle so she gets used to it. If it's a girl, they won't talk, if you have a boy, start with a simple word or two and say it often. When they repeat it, give a treat! Mine likes corn chex, cheerios and pretzels. You'll want a spray bottle with warm water and mist her daily or she'll get dusty. I clean my cages out good once a week. I would buy a book or search the net about them too. You will want a sheet or towel to cover the cage at night so she will sleep. Get some fun toys for her to play with and perches, a cuttle bone and mirror! Good luck and enjoy your new pet!

Well get different brands of bird food and see which one it likes the most. And to change the food just check it like every week, and you do change the water every week but the food.... well just check to see if it's just the trash it leaves and throw that away and give her some new food. But after a little more than a week change it completely. Hope you take my advice. This store/website will help you with the brands of food, oh and make sure you get it some treats and toys, they love toys. Oh and a lot of birds love to see the sun or light and when there is a lot of noise, they hate it when it's dark or when it's very quiet.

I have a cockatiel named "Aflac". I usually keep a sprig of millet hung on his swing, besides his food. I check his food dish every other day, and even though it looks like theres some still in there, I refill it. They eat the seed and its usually just the hulls that are left. I also change the water every day. I handle him every day as well. When he was little, he used to bite, but just pick him up and hold him to your chest, with a peice of celery, if hes a nipper. Pretty soon, you'll be petting him, and he'll become family to you. He also eats, toast, sauerkraut, mashed potatos, green beans, oranges, cucumber and apples. He really has become quite spoiled. They are a committment, and become a life long friend, if treated right.

Cockatiels are natives of Australia and are ground feeders in the wild. So lots of cockatiel seed. Fresh food and water should ALWAYS be in the cage and changed daily. They are not big on eating much of anything else. You can offer a tablespoon sized portion of fresh fruit and or veggies. But dont be surprised if they dont like it. They will nibble (make a mess of actually!) Crackers and other similar foods. (Mine LOVE oatmeal and mashed potatoes!) But in general, a good cockatiel food (fortified is ok, but not necessary) is just fine! Birds are notorious finicky eaters and develop preferences just like people, so just offer him different things from time to time and find out what he likes to snack on!

Try various fresh fruits and veggies, cleaned and cut up into small pieces. Offer these in the morning when the bird is most active and tkae it away in he afternoons about supper time. Upi dpn't wnt it to go bad and make your bird sick! Also be sure to keep your bird on a good seed diet that doesnt have a lot of sunflower seeds in it. Offer sunflower seeds as occasional treats or training treats. Cockatiels love them and will gorge themselves on Sunflower seeds. but the contain a lot of fat and not a lot of nutrition.

Good luck training a cockatiel, what exactly are you trying to accomplish!! I would put a bowl of food in it's cage so it could eat when it wanted to. I would go to the pet store and buy the cockatiel premixed blend. YOu can also give it fruits and veggies but NEVER LETTUCE OR CABBAGE OR CHOCOLATE!! I WOULD STICK WITH CELERY AND APPLES AND SQUASH, CUT IT UP REALLYAND PUT A SMALL BOWL OF IT IN THE CAGE.

Cockatiels also benefit from a pelletted diet.. Personally I would have pellet be 80% of their diet, seed15% and people food (not high in fat, sugar, or salt) be the 5%
I have a cockatiel that loves the variation that the above describes. He thinks seed is a treat. :-)
And of course fresh water at all times.

Feed them anything and I mean anything BUT DO NOT FEED IT CHOCOLATE.
Last night my bird dined on green beans, mashed potatoes, and rotisserie turkey breast. He completely finished the turkey ate most of the potatoes and green beans.
If your feeding seed just fill the cup and change after a week. If you are going to try and get them to only eat pellets then you MUST monitor their diet very closely. Mine is on pellets, seed and people food.

All of my birds are on pellets, according to their size. The pellets are available to the birds at all times, along with water. You can hang millet up in the cage, as a treat. Also they like fresh fruits, cut up in small pieces. NEVER let your bird have chocolate! Good luck!
