India has several languages and ppl feel comfortabel speaking the laguage they have been speaking since chilhood. those in S.India has been brought up speaking a dif language, i have a frnd, she is not from S.India but she is punjabi, and she told me that they start learning hindi when they are in 10th grade. so, of course when they are raised speaking oen language, it will be hard for them to change to anotehr language.
I am pakistani punjabi.....i grew up speaking both languages, however, since i was learning urdu at school, i speak urdu with more ease than punjbai....
there are ppl i meet who speak pashto, sraiki....etc. despite living in pakistan...
i happened to visit the nothern pakistan few yrs ago, and only our guide could speak urdu...
so, where i am getting at is, the language one is brought up speaking, they feel more comfortabel speaking it, regardless of teh mother language or country.
it is not shame, it is ease at speaking a language...

Thats because countries like France or China have only 2/3 languages to speak but in india there is about 60 different languages so u can't tell what their speakin but thier not necessarily shy to speak it its just those languages are the most difficult!!! 1 can b split onto 2 makin 60-120 e.g tamil n malayalam, but some h8 speakin hindi because of racism n not fittin into a certain society its easier for the french cus their the same race

I strongly disagree with the question. All the southern states except Tamil Nadu have Hindi as a language in school as well as college. You cannot make a general statement that South Indians feel shy or hate speaking Hindi. Believe it or not although my mother tongue is Kannada I took Hindi as a language along with English in college.
People feel shy to speak Hindi with a North Indian thinking that they might make a grammatical mistake and hence may have an embarrassing situation to handle. It is not that they hate Hindi, but the situation in Tamil Nadu must be a fanatical rule created by a corrupt politician. Even me being a South Indian had to face a lot of problems in Tamil Nadu.
Basically your question sucks. Have you ever travelled to the eastern part of India and tried speaking Hindi there? People like you who have such narrow minded brains when in the south speak only English and that too grammatically incorrect English, well you should speak Hindi.

you are thinking wrongly. May be south indian prefer talking regional languages because of that is their "Mother toungue". As per your opinion then the india have only 7 to 8 states. We are devided the states according the languages they have spoken. All north states knows hindi becuase of the similarity of languges but not everybody. In south Hindi we learn from school as third language and we can able to write and read more than that any north indian. I am betting how many north indian can write hindi?
As a national language we are respecting hindi and choose to speak when required. U can consider the migrating peoples from south.
South have its own integrity and similarity in language ang tradition and we mostly prefer our mother tongue when we are at mother land.
Jai hind and jai Jawans.

This is a burning issue in India.Neither politicians nor fanatics of Hindi or Tamil understand the gravity of the problem. In Tamil Nadu my father, uncles were all Hindi or Sanskirit scholars in 1950's.Everybody was learning Hindi in schools.Everything took a reverse gear when some politicians stirred up hornet's nest. They came out with a suggestion that State governments should communicate in Hindi with Centre,Number boards of vehicles should be in Hindi etc; Then regional parties started protesting and established thier influence in Tamils against Hindi.
Tamil is declared as a Classical language recently after a many struggle. There is no proper recoganition to this language in its own land.Every parent wishes to impart only English in their children.Tamil itself is losing its charm and surviving because of Tamil movies,Tamil channels and magazines. Then how to popularize Hindi? This is the ground reality throughout India.English dominates at the cost of Indian languages like Hindi,Tamil etc;The conclusion is let English be our working language and Mother tongue be our social language. If it is insisted that Hindi should be our common language then a day will come that South Indians will be speaking Hindi with North Indian brothers/sisters whereas they will look at them as if these Hindi speaking south Indians are not good in English which they would have developed at the cost of Hindi. This is happening in Tamil Nadu that only English speaking crowd is considerd to be intelluctuals.Tamil politicians insist that Tamil should be given importance and main language,But their own children speak in English at home.

I am a South Indian...
India has 18 official languages and more than 4500 dialects spoken.
A language in itself has varieties; suppose Hindi - Hindi spoken in Rajasthan is different than that spoken in Bihar.. Sometimes they consider it as a different language..
Same with Tamil, Telugu , Marathia and so on.
Hindi is widely spoken in North because their own mother tongue like Punjabi, Marathi is similar to Hindi and they could speak it.
Whereas in South; its the Dravidian language that people speak as their mother tongue. Schools offer Hindi as third language meaning children start learning Hindi only from Class3 or so..
More over, other than mother tongue; a common language which helps people of various languages to communicate is the English..
Its not that we hate hindi or shy speaking it; its just that as people of South or not well fluent with Hindi ; again here; not all people but most people..
We as Indians are proud of our diverse culture and language

it is only your assumption. Yet, if you tour the North extensively you will understnd they do not want to speak nor learn any of the south Indian languages.
'' The value of mother tongue '' can only be felt cannot be expressed.
yet speaking other language involves learning-effort-extra. For whose benefit. Even without learning Hindi they can still make a confortable living.
The country is divided on lingual basis. It is for every ones advantage.
There is no special importance on the fact that only south Indian do not speak Indian national language. It is moreso is felt as an imposition on them for no additional advantage.
It is high time the country can think of this imposition particularly on south indians.
Learning more languages is to your advantage, particularly in sharing knowledge, culture, music, etc., I have learnt 6 languages.
yet, my feeling is that the languages may be learnt out of self-interest only and not by way of imposition.

OK, Chinese people don't all speak Mandarin. Cantonese (Hong Kong area) is a major language in China, but there are many other dialects and languages spoken there. In France, there are Gitanos who speak Gypsy Spanish (the Gipsy Kings are French, not Spanish, though they certainly sound Spanish sometimes.) In Spain, there are Basques who speak Basque and want to be a separate country. Not all people in these countries speak the same language, even though they have "official" national languages.
People speak in their native languages as much as they can unless they are systematically forced to speak some other language. Jews who spoke Yiddish or English or whatever sometimes learned Hebrew from their kids who learned it in school. There are many native languages in Mexico--in fact, there are some Mayan speakers who don't even speak Spanish. It's extremely culturally insensitive to force a "national language" on people who have their own language--if they need to speak Hindi in India, many people learn it and two or three other languages besides. Most people in Europe speak at least 2 or 3 languages--it's good to learn as many languages as possible.
I'm not Indian, but I know how languages work. People usually don't like speaking a language that they associate with invaders or oppression or people of other cultures or religions. If there's tension between groups in India (and I'm pretty sure there is), then why would they all speak the same language? They would want to preserve their own language, which holds so much of their cultural identity and sets them apart from rival groups. It's not shyness, or a hatred of a particular language--it's about wanting to save your own history and culture despite a "national language" being forced on you.

Its not South Indians don't like 2 talk in Hindi its a fact that they don't know Hindi n are not comfortable with that.As many South Indian languages sound similar like for instance Tamil n Malayalam they find it easy 2 understand so a Tamilian can easily try 2 understand Malayalam n also can try talking in it.Whereas Hindi sounds like Greek n Latin for them. Moreover there are a many South Indians who talk Good Hindi.

Its only UP walas who are ashamed of speaking their local language like Bhojpuri even when it was a rich language with glorious past. After all still "Raja Bhoj" is a legend.
Some people who believed the Aryan Invasion myth propogated by British and evangelicals, think Hindi is being imposed on them by Aryans. So they avoid it. Politicians are the one's responsible for using it for their owen agenda. And under the pretex of supporting local cause they made it an issue.
But Many south Indian friends of mine not only speak Hindi, their grammer is much better than northern counterparts. At times I could not even guess it was not their mother tounge when I first met them. Only after Introduction I found it out.
Language skills depends on person to person . I myself like to learn languages. But while I can understand many, speaking is yet a problem for me.I have not confidence enough . And learning accents a big problem. At the same time my sibling is too fast.
Point is that I saw that many people avoid speaking Hindi for the same reason. They are not fluent in it. While they understand it , they think they will be made fun of for trying to speak in it.
