If you have dark brown hair and you want to get it blue-black Bleaching is only to get your lighter. You could just color it directly. Although, just so you know it's really hard to get that color out. It's a bad idea to bleach your hair period. It's really damaging and just coloring is damaging enough. If this is your first time coloring your hair then don't. Unless you have grays or something. My hair is black (it's really a dark dark brown, but it basically looks like black) so if I want to get it lighter than like a medium brown I probably have to bleach it. Or I could just color it lighter and lighter each time, which would take more time, but not damage my hair as much. Although, I don't plan to color it any time soon maybe when I start getting grays.

I have black hair and I bleached my hair to get red hair on the bottom half of my hair. After a few months the dye started coming out so I dyed it again but this time pink :D. I didn't have to buy any bleach too! In my opinion no it is not a horrible idea to bleach it and I think you should. I hope you dye it!

You bleach hair to get it lighter and you dye hair to get it darker. Go to Sally's ( or some other beauty supply store) and ask the salesperson for advice. I think you can get a semi-perm color that lasts for a month and no roots will show plus you won't damage your hair.

You can also get a henna in various shades that won't damage your hair.

Do not bleach it unless you want to go blonde.
