I don't understand exactly how chemo works. Will the tumors go away, shrink? Or will they remain but be no longer cancerous?

There is no way to know what the effects of chemo will be. You seriously need to talk to your oncologist about this, not a bunch of strangers on Yahoo! answers - where people get joy in giving incorrect answers and insulting others. Your situation is unique to you, so only someone versed in your case should be answering your questions. Good luck to you. : )

Chemo damages the cancer cells when they divide (or are growing). This is when they are weakest and if your immune system is strong enough it will overtake the cancer cells and they will be flushed naturally from your body. If all goes well, the tumors will at least shrink (but would still be cancerous) or at best the tumors will disappear completely and you will go into remission. Even if there is no cancer left, you are considered as being in remission for five years before they will say you are cured. But all of this depends on the type of cancer you have. You need to write down all your questions and concerns so when you see your doctor the next time you can ask them to explain things to you in a way you can understand. I've been at this for six years and have learned more about cancer than any one person should ever have to know. I learned because I read everything I could get my hands on and then questioned my doctors over and over again. I hope things go well for you!

I had a cervical cancer 2 times. By the first time after the surgery they give me 6 weeks radiation treatment. After 18 months later the cancer came back again. With huge another surgery I made it. They didn't give me anything. I'm cancer free since February 2000. I was by MD Anderson Cancer Center Houston/TX.
Normally the chemo helps and make the tumors shrink.
Good Luck for you and I don't know where you living, but see another Doctors????

Chemotherapy does shrink tumors and kill free cancer cells. A lot of times chemotherapy is given along with radiation treatment which uses x-rays to shrink and destroy tumors.
But the main goal of chemo is to kill all cancer cells using medications. This is done to prevent cancer cells from spreading and to completely kill all cancer cells.
Making the tumors shrink and disappear is what chemo is for.

Chemo has made advances in helping and sometimes eliminating cancerous cells. Not really sure if it only kills the cancerous cells but I do wish you the best of luck. I have family and friends that have dealt with cancer and they have been fine since the theropy so I hope the same will befall you. You are in my prayers!

You can get a PET/CT to see the progression of chemo!

chemo works on cells that are dividing rapidly ie cancer.

I do scans on people with cancer and this test helps to make sure treatments are working.

good luck!

Chemo kills all the rapidly reproducing cells in your body. That's why you lose your hair. You won't ovulate [and may not have periods at all], your hair won't grow, your nails won't grow, and hopefully, your tumor won't grow. It has to eat [metabolize] to grow, so the goal of the chemo is to starve it and kill it. After chemo, everything starts too grow back. The goal is for the good stuff to grow back and the bad stuff to be gone. Best wishes to you.
