Hey bbb7978,

Sure, here are 4 specific sites, and one general search on Eichorn. Also, try the other sites provided for all kinds of records and connections. The Genealogy.com forum is a great place to hook up with other people researching Eichorns genealogy. They may have Genealogy branches in common with you.

Google it. There may be people already doing research.

Depending on how much info you've already got, you can get some from:

www.lds.com--This is the Latter Day Saints, and they're very good at this

www.geneaology.com--The whole thing's not free, but you should be able to do some searches at least

www.ancestry.com--Same as genealogy.com

www.rootsweb.com--Pretty good, but don't expect great things of this one. It'll help you some, though.

www.ellisisland.org?--I think it's .org; it may be .com. It's the Ellis Island immigration records. If you have a name, you can find a record of immigration, maybe, and know where they came from, how old they were, who they were with, when they came, what ship they came on, and occasionally what their profession was.

Rootsweb may provide information if other people are also researching that family.

Start with all of the information that you can get about your mother and her parents (dates and places of birth, dates and places of marriage) and your mother's grandparents as well.

Names, dates and locations are key to finding other information and evaluating it regarding its relevancy to your family. Then information from Rootsweb.com may become more reliable. It can provide contacts for other people who are researching the same families.

The county genweb sites (start at usgenweb.org, then select the state, then the county) may have direct information (census transcriptions, cemetery transcriptions, obituary clippings, vital statistics, etc.) or contact information for local genealogical societies, historical societies and county/town clerks offices from which you may be able to request information. The information on these sites is as good as the support they receive from users and volunteers. Some of these county sites also have links to county specific archives hosted by rootsweb.

Familysearch.org is the free search engine for the LDS family history library. The information found here needs to be verified because it is submitted by the community and may not be 100% accurate, but it may provide leads and clues. It also provides the 1880 census for free. (So does Ancestry.com).

The Social Security Death Index is also offered for free on the Familysearch.org. It can provide birth date and death date / location for family members. For $27 you can also order the original records submitted when the social security card was applied for. That will provide specific birth information and personal information at the time of the application.

Good luck on your search.

I can't add to the answers you have already had. Only this: Eichorn is originally German ('Eichhorn') and means 'squirrel'.

Good luck with your search
