A mood disorder is what describes a person who by no fault of his own, can't control his moods. Bipolar disorder, for instance, is also a mood disorder. Those with bipolar disorder 'flip' back and forth between the poles of depression and mania. The interval between the two may be a few hours or many weeks or months.
Mood disorders, unless they have been caused or exacerbated by brain damage, are the result of an inbalance in brain chemicals that send and receive electronic signals in the brain.
Many happy, productive people have mood disorders that they control with medication.
