As its been said here, attitude and politeness are the biggest factor. The severity of the traffic offense is another. 50 mph over the limit will get you a ticket regardless, but that busted headlight may get a pass if you act like a decent person.

In my experience it also depends on where and by who you are stopped. Some LE agencies that focus on traffic enforcement will probably be less prone to give breaks. Older cops who have had their share of ticket writing may be more likely to pass on writing less serious offenses. But in the end the best you can do is be polite, dont try to beg your way out of the ticket and even as a cop I wouldnt recommend confessing. Just be polite, be conversational but not a blabbermouth, answer his questions, hand over your documents and hope for the best.

I really heard this on the radio. I had to share it with you on this question....

A girl was pulled over by a State Trooper for speeding. When he approached the vehicle, ticket book in hand, she was smiling brightly. Before he could utter a word she asked if he was going to give her a ticket to the State Trooper's Ball. He said without thinking, "Ma'am, State Trooper's don't have balls". He turned bright red and walked back to his car and drove off, her laughing hysterically.

The announcer did go on to say that she might have gotten away with it that day but only because the trooper may still have been green.

Admit you did something wrong, be nice and do not plead or cry. Most officers do not know if they are going to give you a ticket until they speak with you. Your attitude means a lot!

Can you fake an epileptic seizure? If not then get right in his face and inform him that you, as a taxpayer, are paying his salary and that odds are you make twice what he/she does, and if that doesn't work just say "Ooooo, big man, got a badge and a gun.Well, that DOESN'T MAKE YOU GOD!!!" They usually will resign to the fact that your right and their wrong and an immensely more important person like you probably has good reason for hurrying."Sorry for the inconveinance ma'am"

i am in training to become an highway patrol officer in California, and if people are polite when i pull them over and accept what they are doing I will give them a warning. Thats the best way.

Also, don't ever admit to speeding when a cop pulls you over. When he asks you if you know why you were pulled over, just play dumb. If you tell him you were speeding, it's an admission of guilt and he will have to give you a ticket.

Attitude is the big one. Just resign the fact you got caught and be cheerful. You may still get a ticket but if you argue, you will definitely get a ticket.

Don't say stupid things like:

Shouldn't you be chasing real criminals?

Is it quota time?

alot of it is based on your attitude towards the cop, and what you actually did. sometimes doing something obvious right in front of a cop, there is nothing you can say, your gonna get the ticket. definatly attitude plays the biggest role.

Be polite and be honest. Don't play dumb. And if you know you were speeding....be honest. It doesn't necessarily mean that you are going to get a ticket.

Just remember this : the way you conduct yourself during the traffic stop will definitely be considered if you decide to go to court
