Defintion of Taiyya: The word "al-Taqiyya" literally means: "Concealing or disguising one's beliefs, convictions, ideas, feelings, opinions, and/or strategies at a time of eminent danger, whether now or later in time, to save oneself from physical and/or mental injury." http://www.al-islam.org/encyclopedia/chapter6b/1.html

When would this not apply, cant all circumstance be viewed as having the potential for "mental injury"?

Can I get a Muslim to explain when they cannot lie or is that a paradox in itself, to ask as Muslim, allowed to lie under any percieved mental injury, a question.

This is one of the most amazing doctrines in all religion.

"intention is to deceive unbelievers about Islam, for the explicit purpose of assuaging doubts and concerns about Islam, and encouraging conversion. " http://www.faithfreedom.org/forum/viewtopic.php?t=178

According to Christian ethics lying is a sin; In Islamic jurisprudence and theology, the use of taqiyya against the unbelievers is regarded as a virtue and a religious duty.

Very young Muslims grapple with the moral dilemma in which lying is permitted. "Taqiya" (or taqiyyah) [ التقية - 'fear, guard against ] is related to the terms "taqwa'" (piety, devotion) and "taqi'" - all have the root meaning of "guarding" something, such as the Islamic faith. "Taqiyyah" is from the root "waqaa" (to safeguard). It is based on Qur'an 3:28 and 16:106 as well as hadith, tafsir literature, and juridical commentaries.

The only lies which are not tolerated in Islam are:
----A lie against Allah.
----A lie against Muhammad.
----Lying to, or about, fellow Muslims

Quran Sura 6:93
Who can be more wicked than one who inventeth a lie against Allah, or saith, "I have received inspiration," when he hath received none, or (again) who saith, "I can reveal the like of what Allah hath revealed"? If thou couldst but see how the wicked (do fare) in the flood of confusion at death! - the angels stretch forth their hands, (saying), "Yield up your souls: this day shall ye receive your reward,- a penalty of shame, for that ye used to tell lies against Allah, and scornfully to reject of His signs!"

Narrated Al-Mughira: I heard the Prophet saying, "Ascribing false things to me is not like ascribing false things to anyone else. Whosoever tells a lie against me intentionally then surely let him occupy his seat in Hell-Fire." ... (Sahih al-Bukhari 2.378, cf. 1.106-108)

Cases in which lying IS permitted clearly include
to save one's life;
to effect a peace or reconciliation;
to persuade a woman;
on the occasion of a journey or expedition.

The Sunnah of Prophet Muhammad (s) has also testified to the legitimacy of Taqiyyah is Halal until the Day of Judgement. Imam of Ahl ul Sunnah Hasan Basri states in Sahih Al-Bukhari, Egypt ed., vol. 9, pp. 24-25, Kitab al Ikra:

"?. And `Abd ibn Hamid has narrated from al-Hasan (al-Basri) that he said: `Taqiyah is lawful upto the day of resurrection. And `Abd (ibn Hamid) has narrated from Abu Raja' that he was reciting, `illa an tattaqu minhum taqiyatan'; and `Abd ibn Hamid has narrated from Qatadah that he was reciting (likewise) .... taqiyatan with ya"....And Hassan (Basri) said: `Taqiyah is upto the Day of Resurrection .... And the Prophet (s.a:w.) said: `Deed are according to intention

Taqiyah is used to prevent the new converts from seeing the real face of Islam; at least until their faith or mental conditioning is strong enough to make them turn against their own country and people.

Taqiyah is used to effect the strategic objective to destroy the foundations of the non-Muslim civilizations, as a prelude to the defeat of an isolated Israel, India, United States of America, Britain, Germany, France, Italy, Russia, Egypt, Afghanistan, etc.

Of course taqiyah is permitted if there is definite danger facing one's own life or the life of one's family, or the possibility of the loss of the honor and virtue of one's wife or of other female members of the family,or the danger of the loss of one's material belongings to such an extent as to cause complete destitution and prevent a man from being able to continue to support himself and his family.

"Taqiyah" (dissimulation) is the opposite of "nifaq" (hipocricy).

Nifaq - Belief against Islam in heart but declaration of Islam in words is "nifaq" (hipocricy).
Taqiyah - Correct belief of Islam by heart but declaration of anti‑Islamic belief in words is "taqiyah" (dissimulation).

"Kithman", (kitmam) is concealing religious beliefs from non-Muslims. This is part of 'striving in the way of Allah’ by debate.

"Kikmat" is the wisdom of lying.

Ibn Taymiyyah, who (of his own choosing) devised the following 2 conditions / (innovations) into the Islamic Sharia:
Taqiyyah can only be done in front of Kuffar (non-Muslims). While practising Taqiyyah, one cannot tell a "LIE". One can remain silent, but in no case tell a lie.

"Know that the long arguments for and against taqiyah are useless …. but there is no doubt in its validity and legality. Of course, common people do not like the term (taqiyah). Otherwise, the whole world uses it naturally, though some call it `tolerance', others name it as `diplomacy, and some call it `common sense'.

Muslims are sometimes accused of lying when they are presenting Islam in a manner that is acceptable to the listener. But this is a common educational strategy. It is not difficult to determine and understand that different people understand words differently. This causes them to misunderstand what a person is saying. This may lead to many futile arguments or to long discussions to clarify what is meant. The intelligent thing to do, therefore, is to learn about the culture of a people, their ideas and values and about how they use and understand language. Then to explain things accordingly rather than by a literal translation of the Quran.

"The intellectual - and thereby the rational - foundation of Islam results in the average Muslim having a curious tendency to believe that non-Muslims either know that Islam is the truth and reject it out of pure obstinacy, or else are simply ignorant of it and can be converted by elementary explanations; that anyone should be able to oppose Islam with a good conscience quite exceeds the Muslim's imagination, precisely because Islam coincides in his mind with the irresistible logic of things."

First of all, Mr. Las Vegas Steve, you clearly hate Muslims based on your previous posts so it's quite clear you are asking this question in an attempt to smear Islam and not out of sincerity or genuine curiousity. Nonetheless I will respond to your question, because Muslims are taught to be kind to everyone, even those who may hate them.

Pretty much, the concept is that, as the famous scholar al-Razi is quoted as saying in the first link you provided for us (thanks for that), a Muslim may lie to protect himself from serious bodily injury or death. In that same link you gave us, many examples are given of when people physically tortured Muslims simply because of the fact that they were Muslim.

For example, let's say there's a situation similar to what happened to Jews by Hitler during WWII. You're going to be persecuted if you say you're Jewish. You will be saved if you lie and say you're not Jewish, and you can protect your family or your friends etc. that way too. In this situation, you have the option to lie. Note, however, that you don't HAVE to lie. In fact, you will die a shaheed/martyr if you are persecuted for standing up for your faith.

There is a Hadith that you can lie in 3 situations: in battle, for bringing reconciliation amongst persons, and the narration of the words of a wife to her husband and vice versa (Sahih Muslim).
1) In battle, because deceiving the enemy is permitted. That's what all countries do.
2) To bring 2 people together, for instance saying, Sarah really wants to be friends with you again, Joe (even though she never said that), and then saying, Joe really wants to be friends with you again, Sarah (even though Joe never said that). The reason for this is because in Islam, severing relationships with others is considered a very bad thing.
3) A husband can tell his wife, "You look great in that dress," because it retains a loving and protecting relationship between the spouses. In Islam, happy marriages are important.

That, it a nutshell is when you can lie, and those are the EXCEPTIONS to telling the truth.

Otherwise, Muslims MUST tell the truth. In fact, I don't know of any religion stricter than Islam about having to tell the truth...

There is a Hadith that there are 3 signs of a hypocrite and one who isn't Muslimaa; one who when he speaks, lies, when he makes a promise, breaks it, and when he is entrusted with something, he betrays that trust.

Muhammad (pbuh) was given the nicknames as-Sadiq and al-Amin by the non-Muslims of his time because he was so truthful and trustworthy.

Islam places great importance on truth in the Quran: "And cover not Truth with falsehood, nor conceal the Truth when ye know." 2:42

Another Hadith: "Be honest because honesty leads to goodness, and goodness leads to Paradise. Beware of falsehood because it leads to immorality, and immorality leads to Hell."

Btw, the second link you gave is clearly from someone who totally hates Muslims and Islam, and most of what's on that page is a complete fabrication.

Allahu Alam (God Knows Best). I am not a scholar, but a student of knowledge. May God forgive me for any mistakes. I am humble before Him.

May Peace Be Upon You All. May Peace Be with You, Las Vegas Steve.
